Amazon.co.uk Review

Leap into learning with the stunning LeapPad interactive learning system from LeapFrog, and watch young readers get to grips with reading without even noticing the work. Even the most reluctant of readers will find this system irresistible.

The LeapPad includes a nifty software system that combines a "magic" pen with an interactive book designed to help children spell, follow a story and improve their vocabulary and concentration.

Users simply place the book onto the pad, take up the pen and follow the story. They listen to the story being read aloud first, then go over the words again with the pen, choosing whether to say the words, spell them or sound them phonetically. Each element encourages the child to join in, helping to develop an understanding of the sounds each word makes and how the words fit to form a sentence, and then a story. The real fun starts when the pen touches one of the characters: the slightest touch makes them speak and giggle along, adding a further dimension.

Included in the LeapPad reading scheme are: an excerpt from Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, a good starting-point for vocabulary development ; a Winnie the Pooh story, especially designed to build confidence and story-reading skills in young readers; a page dedicated to different parts of the body, where the child is encouraged to identify and then spell out the words; an impressive section about musical instruments and an introduction to foreign languages which involves choosing an everyday activity then choosing to hear the words in French, Spanish, German or Japanese.

You don't have to understand how the technology works; all you need to know is that this is one of the most impressive, yet simplest, reading and learning system you are ever likely to come across, combining some of the most basic elements of learning with some of the most complex. But the real strength of this product is that it is fun. Children will find the interactivity irresistible, and will enjoy hearing sounds and playing the games that are, without them even noticing it, encouraging them to learn some of the most important skills on the road to adulthood. Requires 4 x AA batteries (not included). Ages 4 and up. --Susan Harrison

Children can practise their reading skills with interactive books such as Pooh Gets Stuck, Bounce Tigger Bounce, Best Little Word Book Ever and Things To Know.

Having looked at the leap pad in shops and failed to get my son interested I decided not to buy one yet. However we recieved one for a birthday present. My 4 year old was intriged to see how it worked and he has never stopped playing with it since. It is really simple to use and he picked it all up very quickly. Now travelling by car is entertaining for him as he can take the leap pad and play with it in the car, and as it has a headphone input we don't get bothered by the noise.!I only wish we had one when we travelled by plane on holiday recently

We purchased this electronic toy as a means of encouraging our son's minority language (he's bilingual in English and Finnish). It is a good entertainer (keeps him busy for 30 minutes or so) but it's not really an aid for developing his reading skill. The interest appears to be with the games and other activities in the books.
I don't know if it's our luck in getting 2 semi-disfunctional elec. books (Monster's Inc and Scooby-Doo), but every once in awhile the book needs to be "rebooted" (cartridge taken out and machine turned off/on) in order for it to work correctly.

I was prepared to be disappointed by this toy, but I just wasn't. First of all, the voice of the book is actually anglicised, rather than the usual American accent. Second, the toy is sturdy and very simple to use. Thirdly, the fact that loads of different books are available for it means that children can be kept interested, rather than it ending up at the bottom of the toy box.
It is essentially a rather simple idea, which usually are the best. The technology is put to good use in this toy, and will definitely be a very good aid in teaching youngsters how to read books, left to right, for example, as well as word recognition.
The book that comes with it is rather good actually, to get started with. It has two stories, one of which is a educationally focussed LeapFrog story, and one of which is a fun Winnie-the-Pooh tale, and there is also a musical instruments section, where the book becomes a marimba, or a piano, or a guitar, which includes some staves of notated music, perfect if you are teaching them to read music.
My twins just turned three-years-old when they got this, and, although the use of it to learn to read is a bit beyond them, they already enjoy using it to hear the words spoken out loud, and love the interactivity of the pictures, and funny noises.
My only criticism is that I wish the manufacturers had coated the pages of each book (I also bought the Mother Goose Songbook), in laminate, or something, as they are quite easy to rip, being just normal paper.
Overall, the best technology learning tool available.

As a Mother of 3 grown-up boys and now a Grand Mother I was absolutely riveted to the LeapPad - the ease of use - the pen was simplicity itself (even a granny could work it!), the appeal of actively making the book 'speak' and play the musical instuments, the other books (informative, as well as stories) to collect (and hopefully more titles to come), the educational aspect (always a bonus with popular toys) and the sheer magic of the whole concept - definitely made this a very special product. If The LeapPad does not instill a love of books, through its Magic - then nothing will. My boys had the book and tape - where you read along with the tape, turning the page when you heard the 'beep' - how tame compared to the LeapPad! The only drawback - the price, however, I do feel it is worth every penny, especially, if it does create a lifelong love of reading, whether fact or fiction.

I bought the LeapPad Learning system when it first came on the market,it was twice the price it is now, but worth every penny! Both my children have become readers well above the normal ability for their age, and I credit most of that to the LeapPad.. They both loved it,and it kept them safely occupied for hours, learning whilst having fun! My son managed to chew the end off the pen, but LeapFrog supply replacements for a small fee..so no worries! The only criticism I have is the thin pages in the books for this system, they can easily get ripped or creased, but other than that... Excellent educational toy!

The LeapPad is without doubt my sons favourite toy this year. The book is very interactive with talking characters and some sound or voice associated with each and every item on each page. The capabilities are well illustrated by the orchestral pages of the demo book that allow the child to play pre-defined tunes using different combinations of instruments that they select. Story telling and interactive games that prompt use are also quite compelling. Buy it.

My son was 4 years and 2 days old when he encountered the LeapPad. Little did I know about just how much he had already picked up about reading, and it took him 2 minutes to adapt to the skills needed for this 'toy'. I cannot believe just how much this pad can do - it spells - it sounds - it speaks - it plays games, all of which my son could handle! I am a tertiary teacher but can recognise just what a valuable learning tool this can be for the pre-schooler. It inspires a love of reading that extends my son's concentration too! Excellent value and excellent educational value. Have spent some time since looking for alternative books as he is as hooked as I am!
