My son has just recieved the leapster for his fourth birthday and what a great toy.
He had wanted a gameboy like his older sister but struggled to understand the games and got very frustrated when he couldn't play them by himself.
On the first day he got the leapster hed had mastered the controls within the first half hour and we had to prize the leapster away from him 2 hours later at bedtime.
The educational side of this toy is excellent building the childs confidence bit by bit and giving them hints to help them solve problems by themselves.
I think this toy is really good value as unlike many other childrens consoles it has got one cartridge already included and this cartridge has got 7 or 8 different games on it, the paint feature being a firm hit with both my children who have an age difference of five years.
We went to a long family celebration in a restaurant on Sunday and whilst children of a similar age were running around and getting generally bored my son sat for hours quietly playing with the leapster (all of the other Mums are now rushing out to buy one)
Buy this toy it is a hit in our family.
Leapfrog if you read this review some games for older children would be great as my nine year old loves the concept but finds the games a bit to easy.

We saw the Leapster being promoted at a local theme park in August. My son who was then 4 had a little play on one and really enjoyed it. For the next few weeks he talked about the Leapster every day and asked for one for his birthday. We got him one for his 5th birthday last week and he was delighted. The unit comes with a game cartridge which he has played non stop - except when his sisters who are 10 and 12 have not stolen it to get a go! I am having a bit of trouble getting him any more games cartridges but I think that it is because it is a new poroduct and only just officially out. I have one game on order with amazon and have pre-ordered the spiderman game for Christmas. I am very confident that he will still be into the Leapster at the end of the year as much as he is now.

The leapster has been in the car or several occasions and because of the larger screen it is easy to see in the dark (unlike the gameboy).

The leapster is excellent value for money, my son is learning all the time and I would reccomend this to anyone who has a child of 4+.

I bought this toy for my 5 year old daughter for xmas. I've never written a review before but just had to reassure anybody looking to buy this toy for their child that it is just wonderful. It is easy for her to hold and the screen is very clear. The screen cover that comes with it flips over and can be attatched at the back so it doesn't get lost etc, and works really well. The verbal and visual instructions are very easy to understand and clear. The game that comes with it is very educational yet extremely good fun.She picked it up and was able to start playing immediatley and has discovered the games etc by herself with the help of the characters.There are different levels of skill and knowledge so this toy will last a good few years. An excellent and safe alternative to the gameboy/playstation type consoles, especially for key stage one ages. Keeps my daughter quiet, interested, amused and gives a good sense of achievment, i don't have any guilt as she is learning so much, numbers, letters, shapes and colours! Best tech toy ever.
