4.0 out of 5 stars Leap before you look or look before you leap 19 Jun 2010
By L. Power TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Being Irish myself I was somewhat interested in checking out this rom com with Amy Adams, another excellent reason to see any movie.

So, legend has it that in Ireland a woman can propose to a man on the leap day of a leap year. When an anticipated proposal does not emanate from her doctor boyfriend, Anna hears of this legend and so she has to go to Dublin to propose. Imagine. Dublin.

So, Murphy's Law intervenes, and the flight gets diverted, to Wales, and to make a long story short has to take a really roundabout route to get there in a beat up old Renault 4, with an obnoxious yet somewhat charming Irish guy, who gives her no respect. And Murphy, well, he just keeps getting in the way, and will she even get to Dublin.

But, if you put a woman in a car with a charming Irish guy for any length of time, warm feelings can start to develop. So, things happen they way they do, and it's all done with great humor, the scenery is fantastic, it's like an Irish postcard at times. Amy Adams is amazing, and her costar, Matthew Goode is also excellent.

The one thing I will say is every Hollywood movie about Ireland has the obligatory cows blocking the road scene. It does happen, but come on.

I think you would really enjoy this movie, and I highly recommend it. If you like this type of movie, consider
The Quiet Man (John Wayne) [DVD] [1952] (Collector's Edition), with John Wayne and Maureen O Hara, really the classic of its kind, and The Matchmaker [DVD] [1997] with Janeane Garofalo, and most recent Cecelia Ahern's movie P.S.
...] with Hilary Swank.

3.0 out of 5 stars So bad it might be good 22 Mar 2010
By swan
Format:DVD
This isn't the greatest romcom in the world - it almost feels sometimes like the film can't actually remember what it's supposed to be about. The shining light for this movie is the casting - Matthew Goode and Amy Adams make a lovely couple so you cannot help but root for them. There is a definite awkwardness between them which is either very good acting or they genuinely were a bit embarrassed about the script. The pay off at the end of the film is worth the previous 90 mins. Its romantic and feel good. Even though it wasn't great I can't help but want it on dvd. Romantic and clunky, but enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars In its genre, almost perfect 10 Feb 2011
Format:DVD
I guess no-one approaches a romantic comedy in an expectation of a particularly original story. "Leap Year" doesn't surprise here either. Once the film starts, you more or less know how it will end. But the whole experience is uplifted by the excellent roles from Adams and Goode. It's also nice to see Ireland for a setting, instead of the more usual Italy. Fun and entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Rom-Com! 21 Aug 2010
Format:DVD
I can't believe this has so many negative reviews - ok it's not going to win any prizes for originality but if you're looking for a Rom-Com that will make you smile, make you laugh out loud a couple of times and give you a nice warm glow then this is the film for you! Loved Amy Adams in Enchanted (no I'm not 9!) and had never come across Matthew Goode before (but I'm looking out for him now!). They make a really believable couple - great chemistry. My teenage daughter also loves it so we can't both be wrong. Give it a try - you might just like it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Just throw it in the wash. It'll be grand 6 Mar 2010
By H. meiehofer VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
The real key to this film is its charm. It is a story of how an American sophisticate is overcome by a visit to the Old World. In this there are echoes of Local Hero, though this movie is certainly not in that class.

The awkward journey of the two lead characters also mirrors the narrative of the African Queen.

It has to be admitted that the story is not particularly original and frankly it is all rather predictable. In addition it could have done with a few more gags, although some of the scenes are very funny indeed.

But central to the success of this film, in spite of its limitations, are the excellent performances of Matthew Goode and Amy Adams. These two actors lift what might have been a mediocre film into a romantic comedy with a great deal of charm and feel good factor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious Though Predictable 14 Jan 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This film really made me laugh and it cheered me up - exactly why we go to see chick flicks in the first place I think! From the start, you can predict the plotline and the ending, but there are obviously events you see that you couldn't have known would be in there - and these are the funny bits. The way this film portrays its very predictable plot is outstanding - the writers/directors know full well that the film is a simply based, cheese-filled romantic comedy, and they just go with it. Instead of trying to make the film something really amazing with a relatively common and weak plot and completely failing, they just allow it to be exactly what it is and succeed in truly entertaining people. It's this basic knowledge of the core target audience that means the film is allowed to stay a fresh, fun, cheerful comedy. It doesn't run on too long, everything happens in a nice timeframe so you don't get at all bored. You'll enjoy watching this film, and I can safely say I will watch it more than once :)
