Great introduction to Tibetan Buddhism, 3 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Leap Like a Tiger, Walk Like a Tortoise (Paperback)
This is a concise and lucid book captures the essence of Buddhist meditation and its overall role in the Tibetan Buddhist path. It has the great advantage of being written by a Westerner, who can authentically explain the teachings in a completely accessible way.
Setting meditation in the spiritual context of Buddhism, we are shown its interrelations with other areas of practice and study - compassion, karma, the role of the teacher etc. It also clearly explains the philosophical setting of meditation - a vital requirement if we are to proceed properly with it.
Particularly useful are the FAQ's on a wide range of topics which allows us to see how these ancient teachings can be integrated into contemporary life.
At the end of the book is a short overview of the Buddhist path which I think is particularly useful. As the author says, we need to 'leap like a tiger and walk like a tortoise', which means first of all getting a panoramic view of what Buddhism is about (the tiger aspect) and then carefully walking over the ground, 'understanding each step properly.'
