A darling book I remember from my childhood. I am now a teacher and wanted to read it to my kids, and am very disappointed it's out of print. If you can find a copy, I highly recommend it. Beautiful illustrations, and very cute story!

An imaginative and highly original story for under 8s about a boy who longs for a pet dog, an unruly Autumn leaf and a whiskery old beach hermit called Fish and Chips who is 'almost a wizard really'. Written by New Zealand childrren's author Margaret Mahy in her usual zany and descriptive style and complemented by Jenny William's warm and colourful illustrations, the story draws children in, capturing their emotions and attention until the final page when the spell is broken and the magic complete. Originally published in 1976 the book has the timeless appeal of a classic.
