Over the past decade, Rudy Guilliani has always been an charasmatic figure in the rich tapestry of New York City. Seen as the key man in turning around the fortunes of this sorrowful motropolis, Leadership gives the reader an insight into the personal characteristics that enabled this famous Italian American to bring back a social pride to the City.

Part biography, social science and management text, it is plain to see that the author draws on a host of personal anicdotes to illustrates his leadership traits, that have served the former Mayor successfully, not only in his political career, but throughout his years as a formidable legal authority in the U.S and his personal battle against cancer.

As one can imagine, written at the time of the terrorist attacks on September 11th, this world changing event is referred to on a number of occasions, providing a vivid and chilling account of the intricacies that faced the rescue services on the fateful day in Lower Manhattan. Again Rudi illustrates how vital leadership qualities not only by himself, but also from key members of his staff, enabled the New York authorities deal with the aftermath that faced a devastated city.

Leadership provides a reflective opportunity for Managers and would be Managers, to consider the traits and qualities described by Guilliani, and how these can be utilised into everyday situations Managers or Leaders face in their respective organisations. Moreover, this also applies to people from every walk of life, as Leadership qualities outlined in the book, are so valuable in all our day to day lives.

Without doubt, the author has done a fine job in taking a controversial issue in management science, and simplifying his philosophy by applying day to day personal issues and situations, in conveying his message.

This text can be considered as a "light read" and is exactly the type of book that can give a balanced outcome to the reader, a development opportunity with a humerous leisurley edge, that makes it also entertaining.

Guilliani has without doubt got to write more of this type of book in future years. His life's success must not only be celebrated from an autobiographical aspect, but his wisdom can most certainly inspire future Leaders and Managers, if it is presented in similar fashion to Leadership.

When I received this book at Christmas, I thought I had asked for an autobiography. At first when I started to read the book and discovered it was more about Giuliani's policies in office and leadership thoeries, I thought it would be a difficult - "text-book" like read. However, within a few pages Giuliani has you hooked on his inspirational story telling and you begin to get a small insight into New Yorks transition through his term in office.
If you are in need of a "feel good" or motivational read, this is definately the book for you. I loved it!

If you want a leadership book that communicates the benefits of robust / core values - then this is the one for you.

The first few chapters really cement Giuliani's approach to standards and expectations driven by his experiences and values.
