Product Description

The minutes and hours following 11th September terror attacks on the World Trade Center posed the greatest challenge to governance in New York City's history. Mayor Rudoph Guiliani had barely escaped with his life in the collapse of the first tower. Fires burned furiously near the site as the other buildings verged on collapse. Air Force fighter jets criss-crossed the sky to ward off other attacks. And yet in those moments after the calamity, and in the following days and months, Mayor Guiliani not only steered the city through the crisis, but did so with an assurance and authority that was hailed around the world as a model of courageous leadership. In this book, Guiliani describes vividly the chaos and horror of the twin-towers catastrophe, and explains how the rules of management he enforced as Mayor enabled him to gain control of the emergency. These are also the rules, Guiliani makes clear, that anyone in a leadership position - from the head of a large corporation to the owner of a corner shop - can use to inspire others and achieve concrete results.

Objectivity? 1 Nov 2002
Format:Hardcover
I desperately wanted to give this book five stars - I just can't. I agree with the previous reviewer that the style of writing is lucid with numerous, well centred principles and examples.
I just can't help feeling that the book comes over as a little too self congratulatory. Don't misunderstand me - some of the comments and stories on 9/11 made me weep and the author (with the rest of the NY populace) has obviously undergone a life-changing experience. They all lost ones they knew or loved and these parts of the book are required reading - especially interesting was the rejection of a $10m donation to the twin towers fund.
No, my problem is that the main thrust of the book (leadership) has been dealt with in a way that makes the author appear rather smug - in a "look at how crap the previous administration was" kind of way. I didn't want to feel this way, I just do. Even his reasoned judgement of other civil servants of differing political persuasion did not make this uneasy sensation go away... Perhaps it's just me. The book is required reading for the sections on 9/11, though.

I have read several management books and can confidently say that if you are looking for one of the top essays on the subject, don't look any further. Easy to read, down to earth and no nonsense. Full of example 'case studies' which all make an interesting autobiography, Giuliani's book offers true leadership strategies rather than academic theories. The unique challenges facing the mayor of New York City, especially one who is determined to make things work; a battle with cancer; the tragedy of 9/11. Very useful as an essay on management and leadership and at the same time a heart-wrenching personal account of the darkest hour in post-war history. Throughout the book, Giuliani keeps himself in the background, remaining pretty much a narrator. His work speaks for him. If you want to see what it really takes to be a strong, yet human, leader with true values, read this book now!

Leadership 7 Dec 2002
Format:Hardcover
As a retired Marketing man in a very large organisation having read this inspired account of a very misunderstood subject-Leadersip- i unhesitatingly give it 5 stars. If only politicians both Local and National would read this book then they would begin to understand what Leadership is all about. New York was indeed fortunate to have the author as it's Mayor when the city and subsequently the free world was devastated by the events on Sept 11th 2001. Buy it Read it and treasure the wisdom contained in it's pages. I found it almost impossible to put down after the first chapter and it brought back a vivid memory of this event of evilness which i Saw Live on Television in the morning of that unforgettable day.
