Review

User-friendly theory for students and teachers. Well-structured, clear, and crisp. (Bryan Ginter 20100319)

"It is an excellent primer on the history and fundamental notions of leadership. I am particularly impressed with the presentation of many different types of leadership, the newest forms of leadership, and the case studies." (Derrick B. Barbee 20100319)

"A 'must have' comprehensive presentation of leadership theories from historical to contemporary views. An invaluable resource for students and scholars." (Bonnie M. Beyer 20100319)

An affordable text with good coverage of leadership theory and concepts. (James Dittmar 20100319)

Great baseline leadership theories from which to explore more recent research and context-specific discussions of theories. Good case studies for students to work through. (Beth Birmingham 20100319)

Northhouse explains the various leadership theories in understandable bite-size concepts and provides examples to support the explanations. The students actually enjoy the lessons. The study of leadership can be a difficult concept to explain. By theorizing about observed phenomena, we can make predictions that can be tested in the real world as well as in more controlled settings. Northhouse provides this procedure. (Daniel Simone 20100321)

I liked the summary of leadership theory it provides. It is very good overview that is easy to read and understand. There is nothing like this specifically related to higher education. (Linda Kuk 20100325)

The Northouse text offers relevant material pertaining to leadership which can be utilized by any discipline. The case studies at the end of each chapter are priceless. (Patsy Cornelius )

Great survey text of leadership theory, with leadership inventories connected to each theory presented. (Keith Fulthorp )

The Northouse book presents a comprehensive view of leadership and the theories associated with leadership behavior. This is an outstanding text to use with a graduate-level leadership course. (Edward L. Bouie, Jr. )

Product Description

Now with new coverage of authentic leadership and servant leadership, the Fifth Edition of Peter Northouse's Leadership remains the market-leading survey text for leadership courses across disciplines.

The new edition combines an academically robust account of major theories, approaches, models, and themes of leadership with an accessible style and numerous practical exercises to allow students to apply what they learn about leadership both to themselves and to specific contexts and situations.

Features and Benefits:

- Breadth of theory coverage is substantial yet synthesized in such a way as to leave room for specific application and greater discussion of discipline or program-specific issues.

- Numerous, contemporary case studies supplement each major theory or topic to allow students to apply leadership concepts to specific scenarios.

- Leadership instruments and questionnaires provide effective reflection opportunities and often add a a significant and immediate reality check to the theory presented.

- The chapter on Women and Leadership is expanded to broader diversity issues.

- The enhanced Instructor's Resources CD offers more test items, new cases, and access to academic journal articles, organized by topic and/or discipline.

- A new accompanying Study Site featuring additional topics, exercises, projects, cases, chapter summaries, video clips, and social networking tools encourages active participation and learning among groups inside or outside the classroom.

I would like to have given Leadership: Theory and Practice (fifth edition) four stars because it is a good book, but as of 2012 it is not up to date because it omits the new Integrated Psychological approach to leadership thinking. As this is a book offering students a comprehensive survey of the main leadership ideas, I can only give it three stars until it addresses this significant omission.

To be fair to the author, this fifth edition was released in 2009, two years before the publication of James Scouller's book, The Three Levels of Leadership, which introduced Integrated Psychological thinking. Nonetheless, if a textbook that is meant to be comprehensive lacks the latest thinking around leadership effectiveness, it is missing the mark in my view.

For those not familiar with it, Scouller's Three Levels of Leadership model integrates the best aspects of previous leadership models (traits, situational, behavioural, functional) while trying to address their weaknesses by adding the psychological dimension. Whether one agrees with it or not, it is an important enough advance in leadership thinking that any new edition needs to include it.

Throughout my academic year, this book was the one that I read several times. Although, it really covers the basics and there are many more thories that are interesting and good to be included, it is systematically structured, easy to read and linked with practical excersises. I enjoyed it and used it as a basic reference to all my study work in Leadership. It provides large variety of other bibliography to extend your knowledge and look further into the subject.
