Book Description

Leadership Coaching examines the models and techniques used to develop leadership in others through a coaching relationship. Looking at specific models, each contributor reviews the research which supports the model and then explores how the model can be of help in a coaching relationship.

The book includes chapters on well known models such as Porter's Strategy model and Goleman's model of leadership styles. It also draws on work from both the western view of leadership, as well as other traditions such as using ancient writers of Sun Tzu and African myths.

Leadership in coaching is a really effective overview of coaching models, learning and tools that will be very relevant to coaches operating in an executive environment. It gives a bite size taster of a wide range of leadership approaches and models delivered in a clear and coherent way. I like the way in which the theory is linked to very practical models and tools that can be easily blended within an existing executive coaching skills set. I particularly enjoyed the Coaching Top Teams chapter and have already employed some of these ideas in my own professional practice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Variety, Wide Application 12 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
Leadership Coaching introduces several models addressing the psychological foundations of leadership. Lee explores the origins of authentic adult behaviour the leader can be helped to understand their emotions in different situations and so maximise their effectiveness.

I found the Integrated Leadership model to be a useful distillation of the key leadership theories. It challenges the reader to consider how they relate to others whose attitudes differ from their own. In `Coaching for Icarus Leadership' we encounter narcissism and its dangers. Overemphasised strengths can later cause a leader to derail.

Egan takes us into the holistic world of Integral Leadership. Based on Wilbur's universal theory of the self, which accommodates the totality of the person, he provides us with a clear and concise treatment of what is otherwise quite a complex concept.

This book is a rich and diverse compendium of approaches to coaching leaders. Passmore and his contributors have produced a very useful reference volume that deserves its place on the shelf of every leadership coach.

4.0 out of 5 stars Practical and easy to read 25 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
Whether you are a new or experienced coach, if you are looking for an informative and broad overview of a range of leadership coaching approaches, this one is for you. Each chapter presents a different approach and with a few exceptions, it doesn't read like a sales pitch from the author. The vast majority of chapters are well written and fully referenced. If you are interested in Dr Marshall Goldsmith's Feedforwards model, you may also like to look at Kluger & Nir (2009). Their model shares the same name and uses the idea of feedforwards (as an alternative to 'feedback') to create high performing states.

This book is a great way to 'try before you buy' if you are thinking of investing in training in any of the approaches. I'd recommend this as one of the more accessible books on leadership coaching - not as weighty as some of the more academic books but still has a lot of credibility.
