Reviews

Jack Dee returns as failed stand-up and serial liar Rick Spleen. Life hasn't got any easier for Rick: his wife Mel is still more successful than him; his writer Marty is still funnier than him; even his home-help Magda manages to be grumpier than him.

In this, the fourth series, Rick’s career hits an all-time low – even by his own dismal standards. From public humiliation on live TV to private embarrassment at a Comedy Workshop, it seems that everything Rick touches turns to mould.

It all culminates in a special two-hander episode co-starring Robbie Coltrane who plays a knife-wielding prisoner with a pathological hatred of liars. When Rick is taken hostage in the prison library, it's the perfect storm.

I enjoyed series 1 and 2 on ABC tv here in Australia, so decided to order this and also Series 4 - it is just as good as earlier series. I have watched 3 episodes back to back on my laptop and had to stop, to pace myself, or I would run out too soon. Jack Dee's character gets more grumpy and intolerant of those around him and is doing even worse career wise. Magda is her usual deadpan self and there are many laugh out loud moments. If you liked series 1 and 2, buy it - you know what you will be getting but it is fun to watch and think, glad he is not me!

Lead Balloon has to be the most under-rated comedy show on T.V.
I don't understand why it wasn't prime time tele.
Jack Dee is Rick Spleen a jobbing comedian who mostly does the corporate circuit and spends most of his days writing
funny scripts for his next gig with a world weary American writer named Marty (Sean Power).
Every day Rick lunches at the same cafe with its neurotic host Michael (Tony Gardner), and every episode
something always goes wrong for Rick.
At home Rick has a wonderful down to earth wife called Mel (Raquel Cassidy) and an eastern european cleaner called Magda, played brilliantly by Anna Crilly. The set is completed by an annoying neighbour and a teenage daughter who manipulates Rick for money and favours.
This is a gentle show with gentle but clever humour. If not laughing out loud you'll find yourself always smiling as poor, downtrodden Rick desperately tries to win, just once.
I loved this series, without a doubt Jack Dee's finest work. wonderful entertainment.

Once again Jack Dee is excellent as down-on-his-luck comic Rick Spleen. This time Spleen is forced to take up work advertising various junk products including a musical windmill which doesn't work. He also has a chance to feature in a "homes of the stars" article, finishes up borrowing a pig in an attempt to convince the public he is an animal lover. Some of these episodes feature what is quite probably the darkest humour in the four series. The two-hander, in which Rick Spleen is held hostage in a prison library by an inmate, and the following ominously-titled episode which sees Spleen with the spectre of the inmate's dangerous friends hanging over him, had me gripped.

If this really is the last season of Lead Balloon then it really has maintained a high quality right until the end.

Ok,so series 4(its been a long time coming!)sees everyone that bit older, and in the case of Rick Spleen(Jack Dee),even more of a loser. In the episodes we get here,Rick seems to have lost his status as a comedian.Instead,we see him as a presenter on "The Bargain Channel"-Shopping-and running a comedy class, among other things, all with disasterious results. All the main cast are back, and although slightly different in feel, this is still comedy gold. I did miss some of the inter play between Rick and his comedy writer Marty, but everyone are still in sparkling form.Heres hoping that we get a 5th series, please Mr Dee,and the BBC!

Usual Jack Dee persona - the cynical, world-weary, early middle-aged metropolitan media-type, running out of steam and constantly frustrated by life's petty frustrations - I loved it!
