Herge (Georges Remi) was born in Brussels in 1907. His pseudonym comes from his initials backwards (R.G., as pronounced in French). Over the course of 54 years, he would complete 23 albums. Sadly, he died in 1983, leaving his 24th album, Tintin and Alph-Art, unfinished. The Adventures of Tintin is one of the most popular comics series in the world, with translations published in over 80 languages, and more than 230 million copies of the books sold worldwide. In its scope and innovation, Herge's work stands as one of the great achievements of twentieth century comic art.

The book better known to English-speakers as Prisoners Of The Sun was originally published in Tintin magazine beginning in 1946, and this edition reproduces that version with the original colours, format and extras that are found only in that version. The book is notable for being printed in landscape orientation (unlike any other Tintin adventure) and apparently contains over three hundred illustrations that were later excised to produce the album version (and no, I didn't count them!).
If this is the first facsimile that you buy in the Tintin series (and almost all the original albums are now available, all in French) you will find that the paper has a matte finish and the colours more muted. Most readers agree that the books look better this way than the rather gaudy, primary-colour versions of the 1960s and 1970s that are reproduced with English text. That said, if you already own the books in English and are more comfortable reading them in that language then artistic considerations are probably not enough to justify rebuying the set in the numerous historical editions.
If, however, you are tempted to experience Tintin as it was first published, then I'd heartily suggest that you start here. It's a beautifully produced book, you get extra pages (including around twelve pages that close the first half of the story, published as The Seven Crystal Balls), and those with more advanced French can even read the boxout sections on the Incas that were added late in the story.

I thought the art was wonderful and the story was amusing and clever, including the twist at the end like "A Yankee in King Arthurs's Court."As usual the captain and Milou provide some comic relief.

I have already owned five ot the titles form the " Aventures de Tintin " collection. I purchased the remaining titles to complete my collection and to share with and give my kids a taste of the "good" books I used to read growing up in the old country of Haiti. I purposely purchsed the French version so they can practice the language. These books bring back fond memories of my youth. Quality is excellent despite having purchsed form different sources on amazon, new and used. Je les recommande chaleureusement.
