Katzenjammer are four of the most energetic and enthusiastic musicians I have ever encountered. I guess you have to energetic to stay warm in their native Norway, but they don't seem to let up anywhere they go!
They draw inspiration from a whole slew of mysical styles from the very beginning to the end of the 20th century, mostly European, but give all of them a fresh twist or mince them up to sprinkle over a dish of darkly symbolic lyrics (mostly written by their friend Mats Rybo). Oh, and from really old cartoons (The Katzenjammer Kids, Tom and Jerry, Popeye all get a mention in interviews!). The overall atmosphere of the resulting album is something like a carnival, or a vaudeville or burlesque show, but with some bang-up-to-date pop influences in there too.
And of course, it goes without saying that they are all unbelievably cute. Even when Marianne's wearing that huge silly wig! =:o}
"Le Pop" is now my number one "I need something to wake me up!" CD. I look forward to pairing it with their 2nd album, "A Kiss Before You Go".
