Le Creuset Almond Stoneware Pie Bird

This Le Creuset Pie Bird Funnel is the perfect item to use when baking a pie with a pastry lid. Simply place the bird in the centre of the dish before covering the pie with the pastry lid, cutting a hole for the bird to poke through and securing the pastry around its shoulders. The top of the funnel pokes up through the pastry, supporting it and preventing it from dropping into the filling as it bakes. Also the pie bird funnel has openings at the base, so the pie juices can bubble freely and the centre is hollow and vented through the beak allowing steam to escape and thus ensuring a dry crisp pastry and no leaks from the filling. Our little baking helpers, made of stoneware, come in cerise and almond and are 9cm high.

How to use

Simply place the pie bird funnel in the centre of the dish before covering the pie with the pastry lid.

Roll out the pastry lid, cut a small “X” shape at the centre.

Lift the pastry lid into place, lining up the “X” cut with the birds head.

Gently press the cut edges at the centre around the shoulders of the bird. The top of the funnel should poke up through the pastry.

Trim excess pastry from the pie edge and finish as required, or as the recipe suggests.

Stoneware Care and Use:

Do not use any piece on cooker hobs or any other direct heat source. When in the oven a maximum oven temperature of 260 degrees Celsius or 500 degrees Fahrenheit. We recommend using Le Creuset oven mitts for lifting hot dishes at all times. When using under a grill allow a gap between the rim of the dish and the heat source of no less than 6 ½ cm / 2 ½ inches. When using in a microwave handles may become hot during prolonged microwave use and especially if the handles are enclosed with cling film. Cover just the open top of the dish leaving the handles exposed. When using from the freezer to oven do not place a frozen dish of food in a pre-heated oven. Place the frozen dish in a cold oven and set the temperature, allowing the dish and oven to heat together. Before serving always check that the centre of the food is completely and uniformly hot.
