Product Description

Video Description

On guard for magnificent swashbuckling action in the grand tradition of The Three Musketeers. When his great friend the Duke of Nevers (Vincent Perez) is slain in a dastardly assassination plot by the Count Gonzague (Fabrice Luchini), fencing master Lagadere (Daniel Auteuil) swears he will avenge his death and take care of his beloved orphaned daughter, Avrore (Marie Gillain).

Sixteen years later, after secretly hiding with a touring theatre group, Lagadere returns to the sumptuous Parisian courts to honour his deadly oath. Disguising himself as Gonzague’s hunchback manservant, Lagadere infiltrates the Count’s entourage and waits for his moment to strike and triumph over the traitorous forces of evil. Based on the beloved 1857 classic French novel, Le Bossu is an exciting epic saga packed with thrilling sword fights, heart-breaking romance and epic adventure.

This film appeals on many fronts - swordplay, acting, atmosphere, costumes and the haunting music. The story-line is filled with variety. The notions of honour and chivalry and the plotting and scheming which goes with them are woven into the fabric of the story. We have watched this film many many times, and each time find something new and captivating - and never boring. I bought the CD of the movie music from Amazon, and have never regretted either purchase. A great film. Daniel Auteil is as masterful as ever.

Wonderful film! 27 Sep 2001

This film is brilliant. I saw it originally at the cinema and bought the video when it at last came out. Sadly a small screen doesn't do it full justice, and even more sadly Vincent Perez isn't in it much, but that is easily forgotten by the brilliant Daniel Auteuil and Fabrice Luchini who plays one of my favourite villains Legardere, with his cool calm collected yet absolutely vicious nature doing all he can to make sure no-one but he can have Blanche. And the outcome could have felt odd, but it isn't in the slightest. A Really great film.

There are no extras on the DVD, but so what. This film will WOW you.
Put simply, this is a fairy tale for adults, with added swashbuckling. The plot is extremely fast moving, with loads of scenes in loads of locations.
It is very much male fantasy so ladies won't enjoy it quite as much men.
The dialogue is pantomime quality, and is all the better for it.
Overall its not quite a classic, but is a very enjoyable watch.

Great film - but it's the same as Le Bossu with a different title
This is a wonderful film, but it's available on a UK compatible disc for a fraction of the ludicrous prices being charged here. Look for Le Bossu (The Hunchback). Read more

Grand swashbuckling entertainment!
Philippe de Broca's 1997 version of Le Bossu (aka On Guard), an oft-filmed warhorse of French cinema, is probably the best of the bunch. Read more

Top notch but where are the extras ?
As a fencer I feel better placed than most to rate this film and I think it is first class. Proper fencing was on display here as opposed to the pap churned out by Hollywood. Read more

Swashbuckling at it's best
Brilliant! - Cracking costumes, good story & fantastic sword fights, with some good humour thrown in.

In the line of French films, based in the 17th C, this one is a must.
