Product Description

The three four-song EPs that Belle and Sebastian released in 1997 are regarded by many fans to be their most enjoyable artefacts, and it's hard to argue. Like a Peel session, there is a looser feel to these recordings; they're less perfectionist than the proper albums they bookend (Tigermilk and If You're Feeling Sinister). And this is their charm: Stuart Murdoch and friends augment their preciously fey, orchestral pop with cross-genre elements and two great songs with spoken word on top. The first CD includes an early, pre-Tigermilk demo of "Dog on Wheels", a delicious ditty that sounds like Nick Drake and Burt Bacharach working out a song in a practice space somewhere in Edinburgh. Lazy Line Painter Jane captures an unsteady group with great influences and good ideas in the act of transcending that to become one of the 1990s' smartest and most enjoyable pop acts. --Mike McGonigal

5.0 out of 5 stars geneal idea of this disc 21 May 2001

In 1997, on the heels of their astonishing breakthrough disc, IF YOU'RE FEELING SINISTER, Britain's pre-eminent indie-popsters Belle and Sebastian released three EPs, DOG ON WHEELS, LAZY LINE PAINTER JANE, and 3?6?9 SECONDS OF LIGHT. This excellent box set gathers all three, delivering each with its original artwork, which, for better or worse, means that there are no additional liner notes or photos outside of the box's slipcase. Despite this no-frills packaging, the release of these tracks is cause for celebration, since many are resplendent jewels among an already glittering discography. In keeping with B&S's work before and after, the dozen songs here have a kinship with the moody, impressionistic songs of Nick Drake, the Smiths, Donovan, Leonard Cohen, and the Velvet Underground -- an aching sullenness and a sweeping ear for detail, be it a piercing lyric, a vocal creak, or a delicate piano run. "Dog on Wheels" bristles with nervous energy, and the confessional "The State I Am In" boasts ace lyrics such as "And so I gave myself to God/There was a pregnant pause before he said okay." The organ-drenched vamp "Lazy Line Painter Jane" is the only collaboration B&S has ever done, a duet with Monica Queen, who has a Dusty Springfield-ish wail. The cooing "A Century of Fakers" and the garage-pop "Le Pastie de la Bourgeoisie" elevate the third EP high into the group's pantheon. This set is a must-have for fans of joyously tuneful, bitingly insightful baroque pop.

Belle and Sebastian are a great band, and the months from 1997-98 their most prolific period-- four splendid (4 track!) eps bookended by two brilliant albums in the space of about 18 months. 'Lazy Line Painter Jane' includes some of their catchiest tunes: of the lesser tracks, 'Photo Jenny' could still carry a single in it's own right and 'You made me forget my dreams' is a fine ballad. 'A century of Elvis' is a rather odd but endearing spoken word track, produced to a jangly backing track that would later appear as 'A century of fakers' on the '3...6...9...seconds of light' ep.
And then there's the title track itself. With B&S's reputation by this stage apparently cemented as fey Nick Drake-inspired folk-pop, this came as something as a surprise to many people. Sharing vocals with the softly-sung Stuart Murdoch is a Bonnie Tyler soundalike (Monica Queen) who signals the track's lurch into a glorious wall of organ-driven sound. Pop doesn't get much better than this, and at 4 quid, doesn't get much cheaper. This makes a great B&S sampler if you're thinking of dabbling-- even better, try the box set of the first 3!

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, just beautiful 24 May 2000

Most of the songs featured on these 3 EPs can hold their own, in terms of songwriting and lo-fi performance, against almost anything else in the pop repertoire. But why, as someone else has mentioned here, was "This Is Not A Modern Rock Song" not included? The four songs on that record are consistently perfect and masterful, comparable with Oasis's "Whatever" EP, and perhaps even the best single of all time: "Strawberry Fields Forever"/"Penny Lane".

This 1998 release, put out originally as a box set with two other EP's `Dog On Wheels' and `3.. 6.. 9 Seconds of Light' in between the albums `If You're Feeling Sinister' and `The Boy With The Arab Strap' finds pre-eminent Scottish indie artists Belle and Sebastian in fine form.

Limited to a mere 4 tracks, they manage to produce a record with real range and depth. With their infectious pop stylings and lo-fi sound, this is an EP of great songs. It's a record with no filler, just 4 killer tracks of great pop.

It's well worth tracking down the other two EPs mentioned as well, 5 stars.

How else could you possibly desire your Belle and Sebastian except all served up to you at once? With a song to suit every mood and lyrics that remind you of things that really have happened to you, this collection beautifully sums up everything the band are about. If this is your first taste of them, no doubt you will be back for more ; and if you're a B&S fan of old then this will just serve to reaffirm their supremacy of jingly-jangly gorgeousness. A must buy for anyone who has ever truly lived.
