This recipe collection is really quite eclectic, with traditional British fare like apple pie sitting alongside more exotic offerings such as creole salmon and tea-smoked trout with cucumber.
The pudding and baking section is probably my favourite part of the book, with some really unusual ideas, for example, lavender shortbread, pomegranate granita and pineapple and thyme loaf. I cooked the latter without weighing any of the ingredients accurately, and it still came out beautifully (though did take slightly longer to cook than the 30 minutes stated, probably due to my erroneous inclusion of most of the pineapple juice, not just the flesh of the fruit!). A lovely moist cakey loaf with a delicate herby aroma. I also tried a variation on the strawberry mascarpone trifle, and that was a huge success, with everyone asking for seconds.
The images in this book are so mouth-watering that it had led me to wonder whether this was going to be more of a coffee table book than a serious cookbook. However, the recipes I've tried so far have all been very successful, and the presentation (use of little shot glasses for desserts, pretty table settings) quite inspiring too.
None of the recipes require particularly advanced cooking skills, and despite the name, many are all-year-round indoor or out staples that will fit a variety of entertaining scenarios - not just picnics or BBQs, as the title might misleadingly make you think.
A worthwhile buy.

Bought this after I'd bought the Annie Bell picnic cook book and wasn't sure if it would match up to her book. Well it certainly does - lovely illustrations and some great sounding (and looking) recipes. Liked the variety of recipes and they are not too complicated which makes it much more likely they'll get made. Lovely book.
