Engaging, but over-the-top,

There are lot of good ingredients in this fast-paced novel : the setting in colourful and different Dubai, international corruption, the trafficking of women, the global pharmaceutical company as a business link and some interesting characters.
And the book does move from virtually page one as the main protagonist, Sam, an auditor for the company, witnesses the murder of a colleague. But Fesperman concentrates too much on flow rather than on realities. Hence we have too many improbable scenarios in the plot, which itself is pretty far-fetched given the players involved. While we need to live with these in many crime novels, I just felt that Fesperman went a little over-the-top. To be fair, Sam did not become super-human, nor were people driving around in Batmobiles as the hide and seek exercises were underway. I also felt the ending was wrapped-up pretty quickly too. I liked the pace Fesperman created and his ability to have me turning the pages; I was less sure about some plot elements though. 7/10 Kindle

Solid thriller,

I'm a particular fan of Fesperman, whose experience as a journalist in the Middle East gives him the edge in writing credible thrillers from that part of the world.
Here the action is in Dubai as a straight ahead office type gets a rather unwelcome task of 'babysitting' a more experienced business traveller and 'hell-raiser'. Just there for a 'layover', his colleague goes missing in a brothel and all hell lets loose. But having the fish out of water is only one side of the novel, for we are also introduced to a more conservative local detective, complete with haranguing wife and sheltered daughter with their Middle Eastern/Islam culture/values. It makes for an interesting take on what is a by the numbers thriller, and is very readable. I enjoyed it. (The Middle Eastern detective reminded me of Matt Rees' Omar Yussef novels, largely set in the Palestinian territories).

exciting thriller,

Road weary American auditor Sam Keller is in his twentieth nation as an employee of Pfluger Klaxon. He and his business companion Charlie Hatcher are in Dubai when the latter is murdered. Although Sam vomits twice at the sight of the blown away Charlie, the cops believe he is the killer so he flees rather than take his chances on Middle East justice even if Dubai is a very westernized center.
He soon finds the Russian Mafia and his own pharmaceutical company want him dead. Dubai police officer Anwar Sharaf believes the American is innocent as the alleged motive fails to hold up under minor scrutiny. However, his investigation leads to him on run from his corrupt peers, the Russians and the hired guns of Sam's firm. This is an exciting over the top of the Burj Khalifa as the audience gets a close up look at perhaps the most capitalist center in the world conflicted between money and religious beliefs. Fast-paced, Sharaf makes the tale work as he rejects the mainstream bias news, jealous peers and deadly others who threaten his loved ones to insure the right people are arrested. The author lived several weeks in Dubai researching this book. Gives you a feeling for Dubai and to some extent the importance of personal relationships in doing business in the UAE. Mostly, this book is a lot of fun! Informative and entertaining!

"Layover in Dubai" was certainly the best book of the summer. It kept me guessing until the last few pages. As a past resident of the Arabian Gulf, I can attest to the fact that the author had his cultural facts straight and it was clear he has been to the Gulf or had an editor who knows the region personally. I give this book a top rating and recommend it to all mystery/murder fans.
