The first thing that you notice about this book is the awful cover design. i think that it supposed to illustrate the paper in an artists workbook, but it actually looks as though the sleeve has been trodden over and has started growing some kind of mould on it. Once you get past the visual afront to your senses and step inside, things actually start getting better, ....getting MUCH better...
The hardbacked book is about an inch thick and 9 inches square. published in 2005, the 240 full colour pages over 9 chapters and are all jam packed with information and pictures about design layout. The whole book is divided into 2 sections.. the first 8 chapters (125 pages) cover the design and layout process and the rest of the book (last chapter) is design ideas and profiles from 34 design companies.
Each page of the book has between 1 and 3 pictures on it and the text is managed into 'bite sized' squre shaped blocks that are dotted aroud the page. The tone of the text is 'informative' and there are no 'funny stories' or clever anecdotes, but you will find thought provoking quotes from designers, sparingly scattered along the way.
With its small tidy font size and the clever use of white space the book manages to convey a sense of minimalist style, whilst still managing to cram a great deal of information onto its sheets. (I guess that if it was text only format, then this book would have been condensed into about 70-80 pages rather than the 240 it occupies)
The content is easy to read and intuiative to follow. Each sentance is stripped of unnessesary adournments and is written in the shortest possible way but with the ability to convey its message clearly. This writing style means that topics are explained fully but without real depth to the explaination. You do learn a great many new things, but you almost seem to crave just a little more detail.
Like the text, every picture has a purpose on the page. Each one can clearly be related to the topic of the text on the same page, and this makes for easy understanding of what the author is trying to convey.
For a beginner looking for the fundamentals on the design layout proces, this is a great little book that covers a great deal of ground in an easy to understand and simple to follow format. It does not really provide any layout templates for you to follow, but it does give all the information that you would ever need to design your own work. The pictures of existing designers works would help to inspire your own designs.
If you already have a basic grasp of design fundamentals, then this book will almost certainly not provide the depth of information which you might be seeking.
I would rate this book as 9/10 for visual appeal, 10/10 for providing fundamental design information. (this shrinks to 2/10 for people who already know about design fundamentals).
8/10 for value for money.
as a beginner, i found myself unable to put this book down and have absorbed many ideas with ease.
