Book Description

Why does an old boyfriend seem so much more attractive when you haven't seen him for years?

Product Description

Have you ever wondered what your ex is up to?

When Nell was a student, she and Patrick were a serious item. They were inseparable, and she really thought he was The One. But then Alex came along...the safer, more restful option, and thanks to her over-controlling mother she opted for him instead.

Now nothing is going right. Alex has left her to live in New York with a younger, blonder woman. Escaping to the Caribbean for a recuperative holiday, she is mugged at Gatwick and her bag is stolen. It's crisis time - and she makes two decisions:

First - she will take lessons in self-defence.

Second - she will try and find Patrick again.

Is she trying to put the past behind her- or setting out to ruin her future?

A Pleasant Light Read 14 July 2007
Format:Hardcover
A pleasant light read. I look forward each year to another book from this author but found this year's offering slightly disappointing. I would recommend any and all of Judy Astley's books, my personal favourite remains Pleasant Vices. The main characters in this book were a little shallow and not at all endearing. Nell's marriage has just ended, her husband going off with a younger woman to live in New York, she seemed to deem it necessary to go away on holiday while her husband packs his bags yet she comes over as detached and unemotional once she returns home and adjusts to her new life with apparent ease. Why she was so enamoured with her ex all those years is also inexplicable once you discover why they split up. I give it 3 stars as it's still a good light read, it's just that her other books have given us so much more.

I love reading chick lit but having read so many was looking for a new authour. Laying the Ghost sounded interesting and it had been recommended to me. I did however find the book rather slow and was in my opinion ok. I was intending to read her other works intially but now I'm not so sure.

I read this because my grandma recommended it, it's not my normal kind of read. However it was a very nice thing to sit down to on a cold winter's day. Really good. I can't tell you too much of the plot or I'll spoil it, but it's written in a very amusing way with lots of good observations on modern life. The bit about what exactly "sick" means when a teenager says it, is a conversation my friend Janet was having only about a week ago. I also thought it had just enough danger and peril to make me really worried (that gruesome cupboard on the landing, I'll say no more....) and a nicely unexpected ending... I shed a real tear too! My only suggestion: I would have liked more of Mimi the brilliant teenager - bring her back in her own side-project please!
