Review

One of the joys of making your own greetings cards is being able to make them look professional, but nothing like the cards you can buy in shops. Layering them is one popular way of doing this, and creating a more opulent and handmade card. This book shows you forty examples of making cards that really show you care. One look at the Joanna Sheen website will show where you can buy most of the items shown in here, and many more. But with this type of book it is the ideas that matter most, showing how you can achieve a layered look by not only using paper tole techniques, but also by rubber stamping, peeloffs, pressed flowers and other embellishments to create a collage appearance. The raised look is accomplished by use of those foam squares or tape, making a "squidgy" card that is surprisingly robust and can be mailed. Diverse subjects include Christmas, Egyptian scenes, Victoriana, floral studies, fairies, silhouettes, oriental and old photographs. This is a lovely book that can be mined for arrangements and ideas or used to recreate the cards, however you wish. --Rachel Hyde, MyShelf.com

We all love to take a peek inside the craft rooms of card making celebrities, and they don't come more fascinating than TVs Joanna Sheen. In Layered Cards Joanna lets us in on her 'carft arsenal' (her cardstock stash) then talks you through 20 ways to give your cards a magical boost through simple matting and layering techniques. Lovers of Victoriana, Oriental and Floral card designs will especially love these ideas, and each card comes with step-by-step instructions and a shopping list so you can recreate Joanna's classic card designs in no time! --PaperCraft Inspirations, Oct 08

Nice little book 12 April 2009
Most crafters will be familiar with Joannas style, so will have an idea of the type of cards to expect. Again this book relies on Joannas paper packs and cds, so if you don't own any of these you will have to either adapt the ideas to use images and papers that you have, or start shopping! Joannas style of cardmaking is elegant, clean lines which I personally like. It isn't difficult to visualise the cards made with completely different papers and images, which I find a lot of the fun. Using the ideas as sketches on which to develop your own projects, if you will.As the title suggests its all about building up cards in layers, by matting and mounting, and decoupage, often showing the card in more than one colour or mounting combination. All in all a nice addition to my bookshelf.
