Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In 1996, the Cowboy Junkies could have gone one of two ways: they could have veered away from their familiar melancholic, somber sound or dug deeper into the groove. They chose the latter. Margo Timmins's distinctively sleepy, seductive vocals never sounded better--here she perfects the art of the subtle attack, best exemplified by the radio hit "A Common Disaster". The band knows when to pull back (it lays a spare, delicate foundation for her wispy words on tracks like "Something More Besides You" and the achingly beautiful "Now I Know") and when to let a groove build ("Speaking Confidentially", "Lay It Down", "Come Calling"). "Angel Mine" wears the band's love for country music plainly on its sleeve, and the stunning "Bea's Song" shimmers. A definite highlight in the band's career. --Lorry Fleming

4.0 out of 5 stars poor lonesome cowboys, 4 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Wistfulness probably doesn't get more understated, or more gut-wrenching, than this. Margo Timmons whispers of love and loss over distinctly low-fi arrangements, and for a while it's all deceptively easy listening. Actually, you're probably thinking this could waft around in the background at your next dinner party as the guests are sipping their Jacob's Creek.

And then WHAM! the sheer despair lyrics like "Lonely Sinking Feeling" hits you and you're choking on your wine. Cowboy Junkie's distinctly urban take on alt-country is not lounge music after all - slowly, it envelopes you in The Bluuueees...

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive, 12 Jul 2002
If there were to be only one Cowby Junkies album on your shelf then most fans - and I am a fan - would agree that this should be it. 'Lay it Down', 'Come Calling (His Song)' and 'Bea's Song' would be on most lists of the band's finest tracks.

For a flavour, 'Bea's Song' seems light enough, electric guitar picking away and Margo Timmins' voice is pure and ethereal over that understated guitar. Underneath, there is a rhythym that just doesn't slow, although as you come to undertanding the lyrics, really, you'd want it to. A steel guitar emphasises the low mood without making it maudlin. One line encapsulates the mood of music and the words - 'You can always see it coming - but you can never stop it'.

Better you should find a few samples and listen but if you like intelligent, thoughtful lyrics, soulful music (with a little energy more often than not); and maybe appreciate music in a darker vein for the darker nights then do definititely listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cowboy Junkies rock you slowly., 31 Jul 2001
By D. Sweetman (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I only discovered the Cowboy Junkies in 1996, which happens to be when this album came out. But what I started with was "The Trinity Sessions" (and probably so should you). But once you've got that and "Pale Sun, Crescent Moon" this is an enjoyable addition. The sound is more polished and conventional, perhaps; but that's relative. It's certainly more like rock (sometimes I hear echoes of Jefferson Airplane, but perhaps I'm just getting old).

I find it hard to pick out tracks - the Junkies work for me as a total experience. Try a quiet room and a glass of wine. Poetry, melody, magic; and it's not even as good as it gets.
