When I finally decided to leave law in 1984, it was a relief, but I had no idea what kind of job I was qualified for or how to decide what I wanted or even where to go for information. After taking several career workshops, I realized that useful career change information for lawyers was sorely lacking, and if I wanted that information, I would have to do my own research. So I did.
While doing all of that research I found that there were many, many other lawyers who felt as much discontent about their work as I had. So I started Lawyers in Transition sm as an information and consulting business, to provide counseling on career satisfaction and alternative career options to individual lawyers and law students and programs on those topics for organizations and law firms. From my research and work with lawyers and organizations, I have gathered a voluminous amount of career information.
This book is the culmination of that research. I have now worked with more than 10,000 law students and lawyers nationwide and have incorporated their information and stories. This comprehensive, 300+ page career guide will provide much needed information to practicing attorneys, as well as pre-law and law students. Here is an overview of topics covered:
* a discussion of the problems and changes within the legal profession;
* listings of hundreds of career choices in and out of law, with many hundreds of resources to help research the various careers--including books, articles, and websites and phone numbers for relevant organizations;
* suggestions and illustrations of how to create career satisfaction within law or a similar field;
* information on alternative work arrangements, including contract legal work, telecommuting, and reduced work schedules;
* in-depth explanations of career and self-assessment issues, with written exercises;
* effective techniques and examples for resumes, informational interviewing, networking, and job interviewing; and
* numerous vignettes about other lawyers who have made effective job and career changes.
Because I am able to give good advice and direction to my clients, I was called "the Ann Landers for lawyers" by the Los Angeles Times. I hope you will also find the information and advice in "The Lawyer's Career Change Handbook" helpful. Please call me and let me know.

This review is from: The Lawyer's Career Change Handbook: More Than 300 Things You Can Do with a Law Degree (Paperback)
This book is an excellent resource for any attorney seeking to change jobs or port his or her legal skills into a new career. The book does not contain a list of employment agencies or employers, but instead concentrates on instructing the reader on how to identify skills, identify markets and structure and write a winning resume. The book also contains a list of resources where the reader can obtain further information.

This review is from: The Lawyer's Career Change Handbook: More Than 300 Things You Can Do with a Law Degree (Paperback)
I read the book review about The Lawyer's Career Change Handbook that was published in the 1999 issue of the California Bar Journal, the official publication of the State Bar of California, where the review author said the Handbook is an excellent resource packed with a variety of suggestions and career advice options and a must-have resource tool for those who are thinking about law as a profession or those in the profession who are not completely satisfied with their current position. Because I have practiced law for several years and am now thinking about making a career change, I decided to read this book. I completely agree with the Bar Journal review - the Handbook is extremely helpful, is packed with useful resources and information and is a must read for law students or lawyers thinking about alternative careers in or out of law.
