He is known for his bold conservation initiatives, including the rescue of the Baghdad Zoo at the height of the Iraq invasion in 2003 (the subject of his first book, Babylon's Ark). He also negotiated with Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army in Sudan, in an attempt to protect endangered species from the rebels, including the last of the Northern White Rhinoceros. He is head of conservation on his Thula Thula game reserve, where he has developed a unique relationship with a wild herd of elephants which he wrote about in The Elephant Whisperer.
