Law and Order UK has become an established part of our TV viewing with four series and 26 episodes so far. They are sourced from the long running American Law and Order series. The US episodes were screened for plots which would translate effectively into a UK setting. Personally I have enjoyed the UK version, but I do think it is time for some original scripts to be written, rather than just adapting the US programmes. However, having said that and, although I must have seen all the US series over the years, I only got the occasional feeling of familiarity and this really has not spoiled my enjoyment.
The stories are typically gritty and absorbing. The first part of the episode features the crime and the apprehension and charging of the suspect, and the rest involves the court case and eventual outcome. The main focus is in solving the crimes and getting the conviction so we do not get a lot of personal detail about the characters. This contrasts the series with others such as the recently introduced Scott and Bailey, where the main characters' personal lives feature as a significant part of the show.
Law and Order UK only started showing in 2009 so clearly this is viewed by ITV as a highly successful franchise. Although it was only originally planned as one series this one will run and run. Whilst this DVD set is the definitive collection of the episodes shown to date, buyers should be aware that a further 13 episodes have already been commissioned which will become series 5 and 6. This is a 9 dvd set, two per series plus a bonus disc. The bonus disc includes interviews with Freema Agyeman, Ben Daniels, Bill Paterson, Harriet Walter, Jamie Bamber, Bradley Walsh and Richard Stokes (Producer). Also a wardrobe tour with Freema Agyeman and a 'Tour of Court Set'.
