Product Description

The seventh feature from Spanish writer/director Pedro Almodovar is a black-comedy thriller with Antonio Banderas as the obsessive fan of gay director Pablo Quintero (Eusebio Poncela). Carmen Maura also stars as the director's lesbian sex-changed brother in this sex, drugs and murder romp through modern Madrid.

Law of Desire builds gently, with great charm, humour and care in introducing us to a cast of very engaging and sympathetically flawed characters... and then a murder propels us into a mesmerising and unforgettable 2nd half which is as utterly believable as it is unpredictable. This is one of the greatest gay movies ever made, but I urge straight people to watch it in earnest if they want to see a brilliant film about real people, not stereotypes of either the positive or negative variety, and a story told with authenticity and freshness. The performances are uniformly excellent and Almodovar's direction has a lightness of touch and the simplicity and lack of pretension for which he is rightly renowned. I couldn't praise or recommend it highly enough. Just see it.

This is problaby the most wonderful gay love story that you can probably see in the history of filmaking.
Antonio Banderas is probably at his best, only to compare with his performance in Tie me up tie me down, also by Almodovar.
The rest of the cast is absolutely fantastic, but the one that surely will get into your heart will be without a doubt Carmen Maura who portraits the best transexual performance that I've ever seen.
The scene of the hot evening when she asks to be irrigated is probably one of the most memorable in Spanish cinema.
Without a doubt, my favourite Almodovar's film.

This is basically a gay film, but should be seen by everyone interested in great film making. After a somewhat lightweight, frothy start, the film develops into something very much darker, with fine performances from the leads - particularly Antonio Banderas, who becomes increasingly menacing as it progresses. The picture and sound quality are very good. As an English speaker, I want to have the subtitles but - for world-wide distribution - surely it's best to give the customers the choice, rather than having them constantly on view.

If you like Almodovar's work, you won't be disappointed by this.

In "Law of desire" we can find: love, hate, betrayal, madness, DRAMA (a lot of drama), overexaggeration, murder, sex-change and many many more including naked Antonio Banderas:)
I will spare the details. It is one of the best films created by Pedro Almodovar (who has even a cameo in "Law of desire"). The story has some impossible-to-happen plots, but such are all works of this Spanish guy. They only make his films more attractive.
Higly recommended!

One of his best films, I think. A love triangle with all the quirks of human nature that you'd expect from an Almodovar film.

Everyone involved is brilliant in this. Eusebio Poncela plays Pablo Quintero, a talented writer/director. I think he is one of Spain`s greatest actors. He has such expressive eyes, he could act botoxed to the hilt. Antonio Banderas is amazing as the young, obsessive lover, and Carmen Maura is outstanding as Pablo's sister, who initially started out life as his brother. Yeah, I know, typical Almodovar fodder.

His characters always transgress the boundaries of the mundane, and the film features incest, priests (of course), drugs, amnesia, a car crash and murder, no less. And a very nice shower scene. Filled with quirky moments that make it delightful viewing.

I love Almodovar, this is one oh his best films. But I wonder: why did the people who made this DVD possible put subtitles which cannot be taken away from the screen?

I am from Lima, Peru. I do not need to have subtitles all the time. Did they know there is an option called "Subtitles: ON/OFF."

If I was asked a word to define Almodovar, I would say Obsession! He's obsessed! Mostly about good cinema, but also about life in a broader sense. Do you know when you have everything and you just don't pay any attention to it? That's this movie for you! You just know what you have lost the moment you've lost it! There's a lesson for you! Don't, EVER, bite the hands that feeds you! Do you know what I mean?! On a related subject, if you like this, see "ATAME", or "Tie me up, tie me down" in English. Maybe a bit softer, but just the same obsession. Or just anything he's ever done (except KIKA, wich is no good at all! Well, the clothes by Gaultier save the day.)

It was my fault but I did not see right at the end of the page that this was subtitled, and I have had to return it as I hate having to read subtitles, as it detracts from the film. It would have been a good idea if the subtitled fils are mentioned on the original paragraph.
