Book Description

5 Feb 1996 London at war
London at war - set in 1939 and 1940, Lavender Road follows the entwined lives of the women who live in one South London street during World War 2. Lavender Road boasts a pawnbroker, a pub, two rows of terraced working class homes, and, at one end, the big house owned by the local brewer. When war breaks out, the lives and fortunes of the families who live in Lavender Road are changed out of all recognition. For Joyce, it means a struggle to keep food on the family table; for Jen it may mean the end of her dream to become an actress; and for Pam, there is the sickening seesaw of emotions as she fights attraction to her handsome lodger and a growing distance from a husband who is judged not fit to enlist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant books 22 Oct 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Lavender Road is the first of a trilogy of books, (followed by Some Sunny Day and On a Wing and a Prayer) following the residents of Lavender Road. All 3 books are brilliant and I couldn't put them down. After finishing the last book I was gutted to find that there is no follow on and would love Helen Carey to write another to let us all know what happens next. If you like war time novels then you'll love these books, they are very well written and leave you thirsty for more!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read 4 April 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is the first book of Helen carey's that i have bought and i have to say it was good, the only down point was that i found the book a little
slow at times, but don't let that put you off, it
is in the same style as Lilian Harry or Victor pemberton so if you enjoy them im sure you will enjoy this.
As the book ends suddenly you will have to be prepaired to buy the other two books that follow

5.0 out of 5 stars Lavender Road 14 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
I have come to this series rather by accident, and what a lovely find. The author gets into the characterisation beautifully and you quickly feel that you have an insight and understanding of both the era and the personalities of the story. The ease with which the family saga flows along rather makes you forget just how much research has been undertaken to be accurate about the background stresses, fears and the issues around survival in wartime. I am racing on to the next novel now and recommend you do too.
