Excellent lesbian publishing reference 2 Jun 2009
By LA - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book exceeded my expectations. It will be valuable to novice and professional writers who are trying to break into the lesbian publishing business.

Chapters include tips and techniques on how to write. For example, there is material on point of view, tense, setting, structure, plot, sex scenes, characterization, editing, revising, and how to build suspense. These sections make excellent points and include examples from actual books and stories.

There are also sections on the business of writing. An especially valuable chapter deals with how to understand a contract--and how to change it to your benefit.

The book is very well-written, and the authors are experienced writers. They also, fortunately, have great senses of humor which makes reading the book fun.

Valuable guide for lesbian writers 24 May 2009
By KatieJ - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Imagine you have a friend who has read hundreds of books on the craft of writing. Then add in the fact she knows a lot about publishing, particularly in the lesbian genre. Mix in the bonus that she's well connected and can pass on advice from successful authors on their own specialist subjects. Finally, top it off with the fact that she can share this knowledge in a clear, entertaining and meaningful way. Lavender Ink is such a friend.

The book takes you right through the process of turning your story into a hold in your hand product. It covers basic advice about organising yourself and having clear objectives as well as the mechanics of craft such as point of view and tenses. It deals with plot, character development and pacing to maximise the impact of your work. With the first draft complete there is still plenty of work to do. Lavender Ink walks you through revisions and self-editing as well as working with freelance editors. With that complete, the book guides you in how to find and appeal to your target publisher and also the practicalities of publishing contracts and promotion.

All in all, this book has something to offer every writer in the lesbian publishing world. Particularly though, I believe that aspiring writers stand a far greater chance of publication if they have read and acted upon the information in Lavender Ink.

Lavender Ink How To by Fran Walker 24 May 2009
By DeJay - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Lavender Ink is an instructional/information filled must have book for every wanna be and established lesbian author. It's 224 are pages filled with examples of various aspects of the craft of writing. Guest authors Andi Marquette, Nann Dunne, Sacchi Green and L-J Baker help to provide insight into the job and structure of writing. Most impressive is Ms. Walker's ability to discuss what most would say is the least glamorous aspect, the business end of being an author and she does it with humor. She instructs and provides examples of the basic contract, what rights an author should or should not give up. How to read the clauses and know what they mean. There's an entire chapter devoted to "after the sale" on how to market your book something most authors do not even think about. This is a must have for anyone wanting to publish either short stories or complete manuscripts. I would bet a number of published authors would find it very helpful/informative as well.
