Book Description

25 Nov 2005 Taschen Basic Art Series
American architect, John Lautner (1911-1994) is responsible for some of the most original buildings of the space age and, indeed, the 20th century. The residences he designed in the Los Angeles area, including the Chemosphere House and the Silvertop, are synonymous with the hopes and dreams of an entire era. Characterized by sweeping rooflines, glass-paneled walls, and steel beams, his buildings displayed a combination of fantasy and minimalism, often integrating water and incorporating surrounding landscapes. Lautner always placed great importance on the relationship between humans, space, and nature.

4.0 out of 5 stars Basic overview of Lautner's work 8 Nov 2013
By Alex
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Good edition with many photos and short descriptions. Doesn't contain any technical details. Perfect for the basic and mostly visual introduction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Lautner's private houses 21 Dec 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Great large size hardcover book, on 179 glossy pages profusely illustrated with vintage B&W photos showing some houses before these were re-modeled by Lautner himself for new owners, and color photos showing how the houses looked like in 1994, the year Lautner passes away. The book also has superb color photos of the original drawings for the houses in the book. As most Taschen books, it has text in 3 languages: English-German-French.
John Lautner was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright and studied at Taliesin West in Arizona, before going to California to work on an order. Upon arrival, John Lautner didn't like Los Angeles but during his working/designing life time he certainly transformed "California living" for those fortunate enough to buy one of his amazing houses. The sheer daring of his designs remains stunning.
He loved to work with "concrete" and made amazing houses out of it (e.g. Arango & Silvertop & Sheats/Goldstein house)... in my opinion, John Lautner is probably the best architect ever!
Don't be confused with the Taschen 2005 paperback version which is offered as that's a completely different smaller book with only 96 pages.
This 1999 Big Art book is a must-have for fans of John Lautner's arTchitecture!

4.0 out of 5 stars A lot for the money 12 May 2007
By Judith Lautner - Published on Amazon.com
Most books on Lautner (my father) are out of print and expensive. This one is a great small book that makes a terrific gift or handy guide. Some new pictures, some different buildings from Campbell-Lange's other Lautner book.

4.0 out of 5 stars John Lautner-The Big Series 27 Mar 2000
By Mike Eckart - Published on Amazon.com
The large color photo's in this book are wonderful, but unfortunately, there is not as much information on the architect and the individual projects he worked on, that there are in the other 2 Lautner books I have Purchased ("John Lautner- Architect", and "The Architecture of John Lautner". Also this book is written in three languages and therefore the layout is a little confusing. If you are a huge Lautner fan like I am, you will still enjoy the book, and considering the cost is less than 1/2 the price of the other 2 I mentioned (unless you purchase the softcover edition) I consider it a great coffee table bargain.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good, Compact Summary of Lautner's Residences 1 Dec 2010
By C. casey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book provides a good summary of what you'll find in The Architecture of John Lautner by Weintraub. Its footprint is much more compact, and it only has 96 pages compared to 276 pages in the Weintraub book. The photo quality is good but it is not stunning like the Weintraub book. The main reason to get it is that it includes some photo composition that Weintraub does not have (same houses, but shot from different angles and with different lighting). It also includes some plan and elevation architectural drawings that are similar to what you'll find in John Lautner, Architect by Escher. Weintraub does not include a single architectural drawing. If you have to choose, then definitely get the Weintraub book. Its photos are stunning and narrative is detailed. The most astounding aspect of Lautner by Barbara-Ann Campbell-Lange is the price on Amazon. $1,000 for paperback? What's up with that? That can't be correct. Drop a zero and divide by half. That's the fair market value. I hired Arthur Dyson, a colleague of Lautner's, to design our home. For photos of my house, designed by Arthur Dyson and built completely by my weary old hands, see [...].

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of great pictures of this "Space-Age" architect 22 Feb 2009
By BeachBum - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Growing up in Los Angeles like I did in the 60s, Lautner's work personified the period modern, daring space age of architecture of the era. I like this paperback book because of the many quality photographs of my favorite Lautner buildings. A good primer for any budding architecture aficionado who likes light, easy text and lots of photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book to learn about Lautner 8 Oct 2008
By M. Bonvie - Published on Amazon.com
I saw an item on CBS Sunday Morning about this gentleman and I was interested in learning more. This book did not disappoint. The photos are high quality and the writing was excellent. This is a very informative book. I have since purchased more in the Taschen series.
