Product Description

The award wining and worldwide famous vocal ensemble Gothic Voices travel to Italy and the origins of its impressive polyphonic music. 'A Laurel for Landini - 14th Century Italy's Greatest Composer' presents the group performing music by the Italian composer Francesco Landini, one of the most prominent and influential composers of that time and one of the most important for the development of later forms of close harmonic chanting - the forerunner of the famous Madrigal that would flourish later in the 16th century.

This disc not only sets out the panorama of the time and the genius of Landini himself but also works by his contemporaries. Here Gothic Voices collaborate with the worldwide acclaimed harpist Andrew Lawrence-King. This is an important release that will appeal to those interested in singing and early choral music to discover a whole new set and experiments from a composer that helped create the choral forms that later revolutionized the whole of western music.

This is a post Rogers Covey-Crump Gothic Voices production in which an entirely new team have relieved the old guard. Fortunately, they are just as good and I loved every moment of their singing as well as enjoying Andrew Lawrence-King's performance on the medieval harp.

Although this music by Landini and others is something in the region of being around 700 years old it's as relevant today as it ever was. One of the most rewarding things about modern technology is that it enables us, in the comfort of our homes, to listen to inspiringly beautiful music that is superior to most of what is being turned out in the world of today.

The disc contains 26 tracks in all with various combinations of voices and some solos. There are three tenors, one mezzo-soprano and one baritone. Andrew Lawrence-King plays some solo pieces on the medieval harp and accompanies the singers on one or two occasions. They are all very good: Catherine King, mezzo-soprano. Steven Harrold, Julian Podger and Leigh Nixon, tenors and Stephen Charlesworth, baritone. There's an excellent accompanying booklet that includes a photograph of these five singers walking abreast together towards the camera.

I can't speak about any technical or musicological points here, but just to say I love this album. Wonderful intricate and melodic singing and fine energy. Most of the pieces are very short, but if 'song like' in that sense, they still run a gamut of choral sounds and anticipate very much madrigal masterpieces by Monteverdi and
his contemporaries too I think. I like many GV albums-- this is one of my very favorites.
