All In Black And White!,
By Jokeroom (Pilning, Bristol, UK.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Laurel and Hardy - The Stolen Jools [DVD] (DVD)
This is one of 2 or 3 DVDs that contains the 5 minute short 'The Tree In A Test Tube' - the only colour footage of Laurel and Hardy. However on this short timed DVD, this featurette is in black and white, thus completely defeating the reason for which Laurel and Hardy fans would buy this disc. It's even more criminal because the box lists the other two items as being in black and white i.e. implying that 'The Tree...' is in colour. The poor picture quality also makes you thankful for how wonderful the Universal 21 DVD box set is.

no better than a vhs copy,
By P. Rojections (Hampshire, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Laurel and Hardy - The Stolen Jools [DVD] (DVD)
All Laurel & Hardy fans will want to have a copy of "The Stolen Jools" in their collection, even though Stan & ollie's appearance in this charity short is all too brief. This is in some way compensated for with many cameo appearences of various stars of the period including Edward g Robinson, Buster Keaton, Joan Crawford and many more. The film runs for less than 10 minutes.
The picture quality on this dvd is just about passable, but hardly better than the old vhs issues that were around a few years ago (possibly struck from the same master?). The real downside to this issue is the poor sound quality; the loud sounds simply rasp at you. The 2 other titles on this disc are really a waste of time. "The Sawmill" which is really a Larry Semon comedy featuring Oliver Hardy is of truly dreadful quality and is running much faster than its original filming speed, making it even harder to see the gags. "Tree in a test tube" as another reviewer has already mentioned, is a black & white copy of the only surviving colour L & H. This title is available on other inexpensive dvds in colour. If you don't have a copy of "Stolen Jools" on the shelf then this disc is just about worthwhile, but don't pay more than a couple of quid for it!
