Product Description

Lucky Dog - 1920 Black & White. STORY: A stray dog befriends Stan Laurel and helps him outwit a robber, Oliver Hardy, and a Swiss count, who turns out to be the robber in disguise ! The first on screen pairing of the most famous comedy double act of all time, it all started here. Hop To It Bell Hop - 1925 Black & White. STORY: This is a fun little film, starring Oliver Babe Hardy as the villain. We are used to him being pushy and browbeating Stan Laurel, but in this film his victim is Bobby Ray. This is a very devious and mean Ollie indeed! Good for a chuckle. Enough To Do - 1926 Black & White. Also known as Wandering Papas in USA. STORY: A cook for a bridge constructor is told to collect food for dinner - trout, rabbit and a frosted cake. He sets off into the wide open spaces to collect the food, tries to catch fish using flypaper and succeeds in catching a skunk by the tail. This short film is historically important because it was directed by Stan Laurel and had Oliver Hardy in a major supporting role. A good little rib-tickler.

For the purposes of competing a library if you are a Laurel & Hardy fan, this is their first film together, although not in the same scenes, but it was to be five or six years later that they paired up properly as a team.
Not a great silent short, as it was about a number of individuals trying to make us laugh, and little did Laurel & Hardy know at the time that ten years later they were a worldwide phenomenon once the sound films took over from the silent films which took them to new heights.
For a silent short in the early Hal Roach days, this is not bad and worth a look, but that is all.

About the DVD 22 July 2010
By WESS
This DVD (SUN 9011) contains three short - in fact: too short - films, one with Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy and two with Oliver Hardy alone (one of them directed by Stan Laurel).

A look at the facts:

1. "The Lucky Dog" (1921): The first (accidental) cooperation of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy; Hardy robs Laurel at gunpoint - a moment of movie history.
Running time: 16:49 minutes, but should be 24 (in PAL about 23) minutes!

2. "Hop to It!" (1925): Solo appearance of Oliver Hardy.
Running time: 19:23 minutes, but should be 23 (in PAL about 22) minutes!

3. "Enough to Do" (originally "Wandering Papas", 1926): Solo appearance of Oliver Hardy in a film directed by Stan Laurel.
Running time: 8:49 (!) minutes, but should be 20 minutes!

All three films are, of course, black & white and 4:3, and all three films are also SIGNIFICANTLY cut! The image quality is about average for this kind of films (not restored); I've seen far worse (the early Chaplins, for example). There are no extras, absolutely nothing else than these three films.

So if you are a Laurel & Hardy collector (as I am), this DVD may be worth buying (considering the rarity of the films), but if you're not: Don't waste your money on it!
