This book traces Stan and Ollie's lives and careers, including each and every one of their films. It shows and critiques the developments in their style as they move from silent movies to talkies and from short films to features.
There are sections too on many of the other important figures in the Stan and Ollie universe, such as Mae Busch and 'Fin'.
For me, however, the most interesting part of the book was the section dealing with their final years which saw them touring British variety theatres. Although it was sad to think of them as frail old men struggling to recapture the magic of their Hollywood years, it was also strangely uplifting to read of the dignity with which they faced this final challenge. The quotes from a young British ventriloquist who worked with them during that period are deeply moving.
And of course the book also contains many wonderful quotes from Laurel & Hardy themselves and lots of stills from their films. The photos are as important as the quotes in capturing the essence of their magic. So much of their humour was visual (Ollie's look to camera, Stan's expression of befuddlement) that words alone could never be enough.
I have really only one criticism and that concerns the index which is rather poor: just a list of names and films.
