Review

.,."Laurel and Hardy: A Bio-Bibliography provides the reseracher and the student with everything he or she needs to know about the comedy duo; and, quite frankly, it supercedes a lot of the books which have gone before. Recommended."-Classic Images

Product Description

This book presents a combined biographical, critical, and bibliographical estimate of Laurel and Hardy's significance in film comedy, the arts in general, and as popular culture icons. Of the two, Laurel decidedly evolves as the central player in this duo biography. The reasons for this are several, but mainly stem from Laurel's role as team spokesman; his late life accessibility; media coverage given to his private life; and the fact that he outlived Hardy by eight years - from 1957 to 1965 - a period in which the ever burgeoning public fascination with the team reached new proportions. Hardy's artistic input, however, is currently being given a revisionist upgrading, which Gehring addresses. The book is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 is a biography of Laurel and Hardy, exploring the public and private sides of their lives. Chapter 2 is a critique of four broad influences of Laurel and Hardy - as special icons of comic frustrations; as developers of a change in film comedy pacing (which also eased their transition from silent to sound film); as movie pioneers in the innovative early use of comic sound; and, most importantly, as key participants in the evolutions of the comic antihero into American mainstream humor. Chapter 3 is composed of two very early reprinted Laurel and Hardy articles and a special "Encore" collection. Chapter 4 is a Laurel and Hardy bibliographical essay, assessing key reference materials and locating research collections open to the student and/or scholar. This involves many obscure, often early and/or untranslated articles drawn from research in Ulverston, England - Laurel's birthplace, London and Paris. Chapter 5 is a bibliographical checklist of all sources recommended in Chapter 4. This volume should be of interest to all Laurel and Hardy aficionados, and students/scholars of comedy.

Laurel and Hardy-essential reading on The Boys- 28 Feb 2005
By Robert Badgley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Wes Gehrings' essential volume on the greatest film comedy team of all time approaches his material from a more scholarly/academic and methodical approach than all other previous books. But do not let this fool you.The results are much more of an unbiased and objective view and the book is a treasure trove of previously unavailable information and references to where much more can be obtained if one so wishes.

The first section, and its' largest,is a comprehensive survey on the careers of both men with some very interesting tidbits of new information that will surprise even the "experts".

The next chapter is a discussion of the Boys as comic anti-heroes and is quite thought provoking.

The third chapter deals with reprints of old articles appearing in various magazines at the height of their fame and their resultant period looks at them.

The fourth deals with various books written on them, discussing their individual merits and looks also at shorter works such as essays both critical and non appearing in magazines and newspapers over a decades long span. The end section of this chapter gives the various locations where one might plumb the depths for further information on the Boys.

The last chapters deal with a career chronology,a filmography,a discography and finally the requisite index.

In conclusion the book is a little over 300 pages long and packed with wonderful material some familiar and much more not.It is bound to suit both researcher and fan alike.A must have for ANY credible collection on Laurel and Hardy.
Scholarly writing 5 Dec 2007
By Phil S. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Perhaps the most intellectually driven L & H book, an analytical bio., if you will. Their personal and professional histories are in a 5-section format, covering early years, character development, film technique, development, film critique, bibliography.
For the casual fan, this might not be the one; for the deep historian, it will be very satisfactory.
In today's internet world of mass researchers, one might hope for more detail, however, on "lost footage", rare photos, concentration on the 1945 to 1956 period, when they remained a working team, but the show business establishment didn't seem to care. There are other, lighter books out there, which will bring an even bigger smile for the determined sleuth.
