Product Description

Anna Spring has opened a private investigation firm with her neighbour Martha Bega. Anna's and Martha's first big case is brought to them by Susan Bradley, one of San Francisco's few billionaires. The daughter of one of "Big Susan's" high society acquaintances, Laura Cunningham was murdered a few months ago. The lover, Amanda Bing, has confessed and is now serving a lifelong prison sentence. Laura's mother hires Anna to find a manuscript that Laura had written. It doesn't look like a difficult case. But appearances are not what they seem. Anna's journey takes her into the entangled conscience of an innocent convict, back to America's deep south, to the lies and cruelties of a family greedy for wealth, global influence and admiration, and finally into the mind of a most unlikely killer. And all the while she has to fight against invisible hunters, unbelievable conspiracies, and her own desire to just run and hide and lead a peaceful life with the woman of her fantasies.

Format: Paperback
This is a thrilling crime story which develops from a seemingly simple task into an investigation of a network of criminal deeds under the cover of global charity. And it is more than an ordinary crime story. Ursula Steck explores the psychology of criminals, the suppression and power play in a rich family clan as well as the feelings and thoughts of her detective Anna Spring. In Anna's imagination Laura, who was brutally murdered, comes to life again while the investigator is trying to piece together fragments of information about the victim. Anna solves the puzzle at the risk of her own life. She and her business partner Martha show courage and persistence in uncovering criminal intent and its results. A moving love story adds to the complexity of this novel. The specific atmosphere of the Bay Area of San Francisco as the site of crime is beautifully conveyed.

Format: Paperback
Of the many thousand PI novels that have been written few if any reach the standard set by Chandler and Hammett. J.M. Redmann's Mickey Knight novels come to mind as a top class example, and now Ursula Steck joins the top table with her Anna Spring books. Tightly and densely plotted, beautifully paced with all too credible villains and cliff-hanging suspense. The plot is contemporary and relevant and the heroine's fallibilities serve only to make the plot more gripping. This is is a gem of a book and would be great addition to any PI afficianado's collection.
