5.0 out of 5 stars Everything <almost> You Could Want By ACT! 15 Dec 2003
Format:Audio CD
I'm a lucky yank who got this 3 cd set early, and am listening to it as I type. I've always been a big fan of Claudia Brucken in Propaganda and the next project for her, Act. This cd has been out of print for over a decade and has commanded princely sums on Ebay, etc. It's a great synth-pop dance cd with lots of samples and never quite clicked with the buying public, but ZTT has finally re-released the original cd augmented with b-sides and short interludes on the original cd, and as if that wasn't enough, compiled a limited 3 cd box that, along with the original cd, gathers all the 7" & 12" mixes they could find, out-takes, instrumental mixes, etc plus one "new" song <Body Electric> that renders all those rare cd & vinyl singles obsolete. Even the withdrawn "Chance" 12" remixes are here, except for the one with the Abba sample that caused the non-release. It is replaced with a different, albeit inferior remix. Still, this a cause for celebration for fans - the sound quality is superb and is obviously a labor of love from ZTT.
Quite the bargain for the 3cd box, and since it's limited to 5000 copies and has all the superior 12" mixes of songs like "Snobbery & Decay" < their finest track IMHO - 3 excellent re-mixes of it as well> plus ALL of the rare b-sides, this is a must have for fans of Claudia Brucken and intelligent British pop music. Way to go ZTT!

3.0 out of 5 stars That's Entertainment! 11 Dec 2003
Format:Audio CD
Having recently paid a small fortune for a secondhand copy of the original "Laughter, Tears & Rage," this triple-CD release took me by surprise. I never thought for a moment that it would ever see the light of day again since its deletion in 1990.

This anthology spreads fifty-one tracks across three CDs. The first showcases ACT's only album with the addition of some b-sides (including cover versions of Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" and "I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You" from Evita). Included also are two tracks only previously available on the original vinyl release ("Short Story" and "[Theme From] Laughter") plus the non-vinyl "The 3rd Planet."

Disc two contains long-deleted 12" versions of ACT's singles including the withdrawn single "Chance" and its b-side "Winner 88."

The third disc trawls through ZTT's vaults with a collection of alternate mixes, different takes and instrumental versions all of which are previously unreleased. Also never before released is "Body Electric" - hardly essential, but worthy of a listen.

Claudia Brucken's voice still sounds astonishing even if the music has that slightly cold, calculated and occasionally clinical 80s synth sound. The only real stinker, song-wise, is an ill-advised jazzy rendition of The Smiths' "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now."

ZTT completists should lap this up. And everyone else? Well, to borrow from the song title, it could be surprisingly good for you...

5.0 out of 5 stars Make ACT your guilty secret... 29 Jan 2004
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is one of the most surprising, and certainly one of the most welcome releases of the last few years. Having bought the original CD back in 1988, it's been one of my favourite albums (and guilty pleasures) ever since. Years ahead of its time, Act have a sound and production value that remains as fresh as the day it was released. At turns dark and melodic, Brucken's unique voice has never sounded finer. This stunning 3CD Anthology collects the original album (with extra tracks) along with 7 and 12 inch remixes, instrumentals, new tracks and alternate takes. There are too many standout tracks from this 51 song collection to really pick highlights. But OK, seeing as you ask, Snobbery & Decay remains outstanding, but don't overlook stunning non-singles such as 'Laughter' and 'Chance'. ZTT (ever the label to do things in style) have recruited the original design team to re-package this Anthology, so you're not only getting the finest collection of tracks from the late 80's (ever!), you're also having it presented in cutting edge design and packaging. Nice. With only 5,000 copies of this Anthology pressed, you need to get your hands on this slice of musical perfection pretty much immediately. Just say it's a friendly warning...
