Ok. I love face to face, I love everything they've released, even ignorance is bliss which got a kind of harsh reception. When I found out the band had reformed and were releasing a new album after a 9 year departure I couldn't be happier. I've been listening to laugh now, laugh later for about 2 days now and I like it more with every listen.
The album starts off at a break neck pace with 'Should Anything go Wrong', a fast punk rock number with a classic big vocal face to face chorus and continues with a few up beat tunes. As expected with a face to face record theres some excellent basslines and alot of big 'woahs' and 'heys' from the backing vocals.
By track 5 things start to change up a little 'Blood in the Water' starts off with quite a dark sounding verse moving to a bright melodic chorus. The next track 'What You Came For' is vocally quite reminiscent of ignorance is bliss or Trevers solo album Melancholics Anonymous almost Morrisey/The Smiths-like.
'I Don't Mind and You Don't Matter' is a nice poppy number with a big build up into what you expect to be a classic face to face chorus but then unexpectantly breaks down. 'Stopgap' slows everything down a little giving us a little breather before 'All For Nothing' kicks off. Trevers vocals are sounding great on this record though sometimes he seems to be reaching a little high and this is especially evident on this song, however it still stands out as a favourite of mine with a nice guitar solo that brings Social Distortion to mind.
Anyone who's heard Trevers solo album will recognise this next song 'Pushover' which is a reworking of one of those songs which now makes a anthemic mid tempo pop punk track with more guitars and abit more power than the original. Closing with 'Under the Wreckage' sounds like it could fit on 1996's self titled.
Although there don't seem to be any hugely stand out tracks Laugh Now, Laugh Later is definitely a solid cd which for 35 odd minutes can take you back to the good ol' days of the 90's. It certainly won't disapoint any existing face to face fan and is worth checking out for any fans of melodic punk rock or pop punk.
