Product Description

Product Description

'Latin Beyond GCSE' covers all the linguistic requirements for the OCR AS-level in Latin, and the grammar for A2. The first part of the book introduces new constructions and the translation of sentences from English to Latin, with practice passages for unseen translation at AS standard. The next section introduces the translation and scansion of verse, and includes passages for unseen translation and comprehension at A2 standard in both prose and verse. This is followed by longer unadapted extracts from a range of prose authors. Finally there is a reference section including a summary of all constructions, a comprehensive grammar, and a vocabulary of 1000 Latin words (with an additional list of 250 common poetic words for A2 verse passages).

About the Author

John Taylor is the author of 'Greek to GCSE' Parts 1 and 2, 'Greek Beyond GCSE', 'Essential GCSE Latin' and (with Stephen Anderson) 'Greek Unseen Translation'.

Very Good 7 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
I decided to buy this book for my A level Latin having previosuly used John Taylor's books for GCSE and AS Greek, and I wasn't disappointed; like in the Greek books the grammar was laid out systematically and the covered the entire syllabus.

There were also plenty of passages to practise unseen translation (Latin to English) at AS and A2 standard, and covering both prose and verse. Very helpful also were the English sentences to practise translation into Latin. In the end I didn't go for this option in the examination but nevertheless the practice was invaluable for consolidating my knowledge of Latin Grammar.

Latin Beyond GCSEI'm using this with a couple of students who are sitting AS Level privately, and in limited time, after a very successful 'crash course' to GCSE. I chose it particularly for the Latin-English translation exercises, which are varied and useful, and I have no regrets. I have only glanced at the grammar and syntax sections, but explanations seem clear and thorough.
Any weaknesses? Stylistically, the more heavily adapted Latin passages still contain some slightly unnatural words and phrases, though fewer than one has become used to at GCSE level, and sometimes I wanted to reach for my teacherly red pen. More surprisingly, there is the very occasional grammatical error. I wonder if the standard of difficulty is a little uneven too - some of the AS Cicero passages seem to contain quite a few A-Level 'problems'. (Much of this could be addressed in the way words are glossed. Some suggested translations seem less than helpful in the actual context, and other words are not glossed though used in a slightly unusual sense.) However, for me the book serves its particular purpose well, and I would like my criticisms to be seen in that light.

optimum iterum 3 Mar 2011

John Taylor has again put students of Latin (and their teachers) in his debt with this volume, a companion to his 'Greek Beyond GCSE' that follows the same format. This is a comprehensive guide and vade mecum for all the language papers in AS and A2. A full grammar section with sentences is followed by many brief, annotated prose passages (Nepos, Livy, Cicero), then a guide to scansion and poetic vocabulary section is followed by a good dose of Ovid, rounded off my lengthier passages from De Bello Gallico and some of the more famous excerpts from Livy.
The explanations are always clear, interesting and informative - with a bit of sly humour as well. Gratias maximas tibi agimus, magister!
