This mid 1970s recording brought the music of Barrios to the notice of the classical guitar world. It is still the benchmark by which other Barrios recordings are measured, such is the quality of John Williams' playing, coupled with a close but well focused recording. This standard is also maintained in the Ponce "Folia" Variations, which are performed with great clarity & a feeling for unity, culminating in a fugue of impressive scale.
Tracks 7 & 13 show Barrios' poetic skill in tremolo composition, beautifully controlled by John Williams. The opening La Catedral also impresses with its contrasting sections & virtuosic ending. Williams more recently recorded another Barrios disc ("The Great Paraguayan"), but the recorded sound seems less natural.
At over 75 minutes, this cd is a generous showcase for both performer & composers.

This is a favorite music from many years, I play this as often as I can, very peaceful and reposing with gay moments which I wait for. A visitor went off with my copy and I found I had to have a repeat as soon as possible. Thanks to Amazon my wish was fulfilled in days!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is tosh. Make no mistake. I bought this because I have a strong liking for Latin American music, and a great love for the guitar.
This is rubbish, possibly put together by someone who is either blind, or drunk. Most of the titles do not match the music, and, quite frankly is one of my wasted efforts. Yuk!

Excellent recordings of lesser-known works 30 Nov. 1999
By Mark Salter - Published on Amazon.com

This recording is a fine value, featuring a legendary performer presenting some lesser-known gems not part of the standard repertoire. Well worth the modest price.

Terrific Music, Terrific Guitarist, Terrific Price! 13 Feb. 2002
By Hans Castorp - Published on Amazon.com

Can't be Beat! 77 minutes worth of some great, neglected 20th Century classics, and the linear notes are by Mr. Williams no less!! Every second here is a gem, and you don't have to play guitar to appreciate these wonders. If you do play, give this one some serious listening, and you'll surely learn some new playing techniques..Among the very best classic guitar values anywhere!!!!

Great CD for the price! 16 Jan. 2002

The only drawback is that the CD was burned from tapes, which means that you get a bit of hiss in the backround. But the artistry of Williams, together with the genius of Barrios really shines through!

5 stars---But only for the genuine article. 30 April 2009

My review is based on a cassette tape of this recording which is a ground-
breaking performance of the music of barrios. But when I received the CD I discovered the listings were the same as the cassette, but the disc
contained entirely different pieces by another performer---a far inferior
one. I think this is a case of wilful deceit by whoever packaged the CD--
The disc itself appears completely bogus---so my advice would be to skip
this one (I tried another vendor--same result) and try another CD of Williams playing Barrios.Latin American Guitar Music

Careful. An industrial mistake 2 Jan. 2010

This cd is great, but be careful since there has been a factory error in several editions.
My original cd had a scratch in one of the tracks, so I decided to buy a new one in a store. The new one came in the case of this cd and the label in the cd was "Latin American Guitar Music - John Williams". But when I played it, the music was different. Thanks to my iTunes Library we learnt that it had the tracks of "Famous Guitar Music of Latin America" with Kurt Schneeweiss. Now, several years later I bought the cd again from AMAZON and the content is again the Schneeweiss record.
