Album Description

The Flaming Lips have grown over the last twenty years from a group of inspired amateurs to one of today's most powerful and influential bands. On LateNight Tales, they select the music that has influenced their lives and their work. The results, as you might expect, are an eclectic melange of the cool and the quirky: from Radiohead to 10CC and from Lush to Miles Davis. This also includes and exclusive recording of their rendition of "Seven Nation Army".

In the great sleeve notes to this collection, Wayne Coyne reminices on the time each band member had to make a couple of compilation tapes to last for an entire tour in their old van. As this could be for Months, the choices tended to be honest reflections of each tapers taste. This asthetic continues in this fine compilation, an eclectic mix with an overriding sense of the other worldiness which defines much of the Lips output.

For the Lips fan it illuminates the band's own unique musical take on life, for the oldies it reminds us to replace some of that classic vinyl (Psychedleic Furs - what a great track) and for anyone there are some real eye openers (especially for me Mice Parade and Faust).

So this is fine for a chilled nite in, but even better to slip into the player as you start that road trip in the USA from coast to coast.

The Flaming Lips, if nothing else, write great liner notes and describe their and other bands' music with a rare verve. This is less a chillout mix than a well packaged and produced compilation of songs which the Lips would be proud to have released (while passing the time driving across the interior of the US). One can easily why as the compilers are blessed with fine taste. The album starts off brilliantly. The otherworldy strains of Bjork run into Faust via Miles Davis and Chris Bell who has been a staple of compilations and cover versions since This Mortal Coil in the late 1980s.

The album finishes fantastically with probably the finest moments
from both Nick Drake and Radiohead in "River Man" and "Pyramid Song" respectively. The only blip of the final tracks is 10CC's "I'm Not In Love" which I cannot stand (check out Talking Heads' unrelated song of the same name from their second album which would have been a better choice). However, quality control is restored with the beautiful "Another Green World" by Brian Eno concludes the album proper (save for a spoken word piece by David Shrigley of whom I had never heard previously - imagine Aidan Moffat speaking over the more industial elements of Bjork's latest offering).

If there is a weakness to the compilation, it is in the middle which comprises songs by the like of the Chameleons, Love and Rockets and Psychedelic Furs which, while by no means bad songs, do not provide the same chill as the surrounding material.

Despite the depth of musical riches, the highlights for me were two. In reverse order, the Aphex Twin's "Flim" serves as a reminder that, when Richard James wants to, he can create music of unsurpassed beauty. To my shame, "People" by Alfie was completely unknown to me. It is quite simply the best song Pulp and Belle and Sebastian never wrote and should be re-released and made number one.

Meanwhile, this has whetted the appetite for the next Flaming Lips album properly. Enjoy.

cosmic adventures !!!! 29 April 2006
Format:Audio CD
The Flaming Lips is a whole new 'legacy' to me... and to be honest im glad ive joined it. It all started when a colleague put on Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots at work... from the moment he pressed play I was taken somewhere else and jumped into The Lips cosmic journey...

Months and Months of listening to 'in the morning of the magicians' cycling to work... id definatley found something special... then I went out and splashed my cash on The Soft Bulletin then recently At War With The Mystics... what makes the Lips so appealing to me?

Their Diversity... melodies, harmony's, chaos... Wayne Coyne and his fellow Oklahomans never fail to surprise with absurd, hillarious lyrics raising in eyebrow or two we love it....

In this latest edition of Late Night Tales...we as music lovers get to experience what goes on in Wayne's World of music what he listens to a home or what he plays at partee's...

From track 1 the adventure begins... Bjork's enchanting voice sets the tune into cosmos...but to me the standout track on the compilation is Aphex Twins - 'film' the Lips give us a taste of sublime electronic bliss.... electronica at its best in my ears...amazing!!!!! Then records from Alfie, The Pyschedelic Furs... give us vintage cosmic rock inspitration for all us cosmic explorers....

The Lip's cover of Seven Nation Army is an exclusive release on this compilation and what a treat at that ... Coyne and co's cover is spot on and too be honest The Stripes will of felt more then honoured at this effort...

All I can say is... if you love the Lips and you'll love this compilation... like me it make take a few listens to 'fully' convince you and then all you late night tales 'addicts' should definately be chuffed... if you loved the sound of this check out Belle & Sebastian's more recent efforts on LateNightTales....just as good if not better soz Wayne!!!! If you liked the Aphex twin track on this record get ready for track 3 on Belle & Sebastians comp. enjoy!!! :)
