4.0 out of 5 stars misunderstood 4 Oct 2006
Format:Audio CD
had to write a reply to mr. murphy's review as i feel he has missed the point of the collection. these series of albums and others like them are actually compiled by the named artists, in this case AIR, they are the tracks that made their music what it is. they never claim to be in the same genre and in fact very rarely are. BUT it is very clear to me how alot of these tracks must have influenced the two guys as they were growing up. i would say in conclusion that all these type of compilations are for music lovers who like alot more than one genre and have an open mind. every track on the album is a classic in its own right but if you are after an album that sounds like AIR this ISNT it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect 2 Aug 2008
Format:Audio CD
I was lucky enough to discover this album as part of the in-flight entertainment on a night flight from New York to London. I can't sleep on flights at the best of times, so this was a gift from God that night. While slowly drifting in and out of a half slumber I discovered Jeff Alexander's "Come Wander With Me" an otherworldly and beautiful piece of music from an old Twilight Zone I later discovered, unbelievable. I was re-introduced to "Ghosts" by Japan, which I've always loved, but this was the perfect setting for David Sylvian's ether like vocals. There is never a wrong time to hear Minnie Ripperton's "Loving You", always tragic and eternally moving. Other highlights include The Cure, Nino Rota and Lee Hazlewood, all wonderful selections, but special mention has to go to the inclusion of "The Old Man's Back Again" by Scott Walker which blew me away and I must have listened to this at least six times over. I have since bought Air - Late Night Tales (and Scott 4 - genius). I can't recommend this enough, without doubt the finest chill-out album I have heard, and a great introduction to some fabulous artists too. Air obviously have an ear for atmospheric and wonderful music and here is the proof.
I can't believe the ridiculous criticisms here of this album, madness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful. An official Air "Deck Safari" 30 Jan 2007
By N. Hall
Format:Audio CD
Incorrectly, many people think they are buying another album of Air's own compositions. What is key here is that **these are tracks which influence Air's music**. If you were ever lucky enough to hear Air's Essential Mix or the virtually-impossible-to-find Deck Safari compilations (which were the original Essential mix divided and whose track were the inspiration for Moon Safari), you will know where this is headed.

Air have compiled a beautiful mix of widely varied artists. Japan's Ghosts is a little odd and somewhat out of place though wonderful gems such as those by Georges Delerue, Jeff Alexander and Tan Dun (he from the fantastic 'Hero' film score) as well as a melancholy though sublime Lee Hazelwood piece really make a fantastic album.

Overall this is highly recommended and great for chilling to - any time of the day - though it sounds so good on a dark winter night!

4.0 out of 5 stars For catholic tastes 5 Oct 2006
Format:Audio CD
The previous review somewhat misses the point, effectively criticising a compilation for being a compilation - in future look at the tracklisting!

This is a collection of great music that has influenced the Air sound ranging far and wide and varying according to whether you got the promo version or the released version above. Either way the selections should be of great interest to anyone with a passing interest in the genealogy of music or for people who'd like an insight into what makes Air tick creatively.

4.0 out of 5 stars So cool 9 Oct 2006
Format:Audio CD
I couldn't disagree more with the above comment. This is not an Air album, with Air songs. But it is an album the two guys from Air have put together to show where they got their ideas and inspiration from. It is very funny to hear these songs because they all have elements of what later would be Air. So when you take the sum of all the songs you can see where they come from. I'll recommend it anytime.
