Here you will discover 40 great and often legendary performances from some of the giants of jazz and taken from the period 1949 to 1957. The total running time is approx 145 minutes and like the One Day Music releases also from the same company the liner notes also include a little gallery of photographs of some of the artists featured in the set. The notes are by regular Michael Heatley and the packaging sets the scene for some serious late night jazz numbers and standards of the era. Many of the standards composers feature and there are many immediately identifiable versions such as Erroll Garner's hit recording of "Misty"; Barney Kassel's nimble rendition of "Laura"; and even an undated performance from Charlie Parker (with strings) of "Stella by Starlight". CD2 boasts more in the same style but opens with the ever popular "Petite Fleur" from Sidney Bechet; the Gershwin's feature with "Someone to Watch Over Me" from tenor sax man Ben Webster and that usually lounge located "Cocktails for Two" is given a vibrant Dizzy Gillespie treatment on this set. Another excellent addition to the Not Now Music calalogue & great value.

This is the first Jazz CD I bought and I can't recommend it highly enough! I recognised a couple of tracks "Cry Me A River" and "Misty" and thought it would be great as "background music" for when friends come over but it's far too good to have turned down low. It's got that cool and mellow feel just the thing to chill out to. I often put this CD on when I preparing a meal at the weekend, open a bottle of wine and chill out.

A good all rounder if you don't have a jazz collection , however there are better collections - see Blue Note - and there are better albums from the individual bands , all in all a good (and cheap) tribute to some wonderful music .

I am not a big jazz fan. My education is sadly lacking in that genre. I would not beable to recommend any jazz singer/player however I do love this album. Very laid back, relaxing music. For late at night or simply when you want to relax with a glass of wine. With company or without!
