Review

Praise for Door of No Return:
... consistently engaging ... This is a really excellent and original thriller. ... its premise and Zac’s wry, streetwise voice make it fresh, funny and compelling.

(Amanda Craig, The Times )

'... original, page-turning ... filled with action, adventure, emotions, a well crafted plot and a delicately handled theme regarding the roles of Britain and Ghana during the slaving era.  ... a contemporary adventure story'

(Writeaway.org )

' a rollicking good mystery story'

(TES )

'Max is marvellous. I won't forget him in a hurry. ... He's one of the most sharply-observed teenage characters I've come across in a long time. ... absolutely super-duper ... heartily recommended.'

(The Book Bag )

Product Description

It’s a snowy evening, South London. From a bus, Max Wolf and his brother Angelo see a gang ominously tracking a well-known rapper, Mogul King, through the dark streets. Minutes later, Mogul King boards the bus, presses a parcel into Max’s hands, exacts an incomprehensible promise, and jumps off again - to his death.

The parcel contains an extraordinary ancient bronze dagger, and within hours Max is running for his own life through London, his brother, Angelo, is dead, apparently the victim of a gang drive-by shooting, and his friend, Sapphire, is next on the hit list.

But everything is not as it seems. Everything leads the British Museum. Everything began with the ill-fated British Punitive Expedition of 1897 and the looting of the fabulous Benin Bronzes from Nigeria over a hundred years ago.

In an intriguing dual storyline, Max's racing first person narrative story is offset by a scrap book of letters, memoirs, drawings, photos and journal entries, by one Hugh Hardy, Gunner aboard the Theseus, and foot soldier on that ruinous expedition over a century ago.

Sarah Mussi has done it again. Having won a literary prize for her first book and been nominated for a second award she has delivered yet another action packed adventure with an intriguing historical backstory about the Benin Bronzes of Nigeria.

The tale is fast paced, page turning and has a gritty reality in its portrayal of the South London Gansta scene. Max the unwitting and reluctant hero endears himself to the reader by his insouciant and humourous attitude in the face of great danger. He is juxtaposed against Roland his posh friend who is fascinated by London gangs and grabs the opportunity to turn his theoretical knowledge into reality as he becomes embroiled in Max's quest. Sapphire, the girlfriend of Max's murdered twin brother, tries to retain a grip on normality but catapults all three characters further into the darker world of grey suited government fixers who will stop at nothing.

This book has great depth as it delivers as much as Horowitz and Higson in excitement and adventure but also deals with interesting moral questions regarding the repatriation of looted artefacts from Africa.

Sarah Mussi is a rising star of adventure packed kids stories that pack real punch.

A gripping thriller that you'll find hard to put down. The first person point of view adds extra oomph and dynamite. Read it! Excellent present for all teenagers, but especially boys!

What really makes this book stick out is how genuinely FUN it is, despite the weighty subject matter. Max is a tough kid in a tough world, surrounded by the gun crime and gangs of South London - and after witnessing the shocking murder of his twin brother, life doesn't get any easier. The plot revolves around the attempt to repatriate the Benin Bronzes from the British Museum, and a sinister government conspiracy to stop Max exposing an ugly period of British history which has huge economic consequences in the present day.

But this is no stuffy lecture: it's a gripping edge-of-the-seat action thriller, peopled with sparky memorable characters - Roland, sweet posh boy who desperately wants a piece of the gangsta action without a clue what that really means; Sapphire, his brother's beautiful girlfriend who can't quite forgive Max for still being alive; and Max himself, an endearing scrappy kid who learns there could be more to his life than having the latest mobile phone or the most expensive trainers. You can't help but root for them, as the perils pile up all the way to an explosive climax and a truly thought-provoking ending.

For the librarians and teachers among us, a teen novel with a convincing contemporary black hero that tackles African history is always going to be welcome. But it would be a shame if this was relegated to the 'issue books' shelf, because fans of Antony Horowitz, Charlie Higson and MG Harris will love it (even if they learn a thing or two along the way!).
