I have recently read the entire 3 book (6 book compilation) of this series, and I'm actually very pleasently surprised at how good these books are. They are written in a fastpaced, easy flowing style, that is slightly reminicent of say a softcover detective/crime story, not that it is in any other way related to such content. The protaganist, is a female, and at first glance she seems rather shallow and without much depth. But as the story progresses and you learn more about her, the reader comes to realise that this woman is a haunted, soulsearching troubled individual despite her immense power and bravado. The storyline itself is pretty straight forward; An ancient vampire who is looking to discover who has put a price on her head and why, leaving a lot of death and destruction in her wake. And an individual who for love, has commited some heinous acts, and is starting to realise that perhaps the motivation alone does not absolve her from the consequences of her actions.
Against that backdrop is a rather existentialistic book. One that puts a main character of immense age and power in stark opposition to the search for forgiveness and redemption for not just her actions but the betrayal of her promises to God.

Im not one for new-age blabber, but the surprise for me with these stories were how natural and easy these parts of the story meshed with a really welltold tale about vampires and demons. And the refreshing part was that although having read many stories about vampires and the supernatural in fiction, I had never before come across a book that tried to look at what an actual vampire might be struggling with in the bigger picture. Something very akin to what some humans would be grabbling with.

The Last Vampire 1 - 6 is simply the best vampire series ever written and I have read archives of vampire tales to compare it to. What really defines the series is the fresh twist on the vampire legend interwoven with frighteningly believable historic and religious legends. While it is a series, each book in the series manages to follow on intricately from the first one but manages to maintain the status of a novel in its own right. I grew up on these books and had read them twice over before even realizing that Christopher Pike was the author. The books are not appropriate for younger children as they are riddled with sex scenes and more subtle sexual innuendos and references but these are well placed to extenuate the lustful characteristics attributed to vampires in legend without sounding contrived and cheap. I wholly recommend this book to seasoned and aspiring fans alike.

There are mountains of vampire books around these days. Unfortunately, a lot of these titles are pure garbage, and not worth the paper they are printed on. Pike's, The Last Vampire, on the other hand, is one of those glorious, shining exceptions to the rule, that makes you appreciate how good the genre can actually be. Written in a very similar style to that of Darren Shan, The Last Vampire takes you on a first-person adventure, packed full of action and, unlike many teen novels, with a lead character who shows no mercy . . . most of the time. I can't say too much about this book as it will spoil the plot. But I can say one thing - buy it. Now. You won't be disappointed. All Darren Shan fans should be Pike fans, too. I'd swear these authors are joined at the mind.

Peace.

After reading the reviews below and seeing that it got all 5 stars I decide to buy this book and believe me it was a waste of money and time. The writing is horrible it just doesn't flow and is so unbelievable she falls completely in love with someone after one day aww come on really! I know what your thinking it can't be that bad it isn't that bad but it isn't worth wasting your time if you are like me and love books that keep you interested then this soo isn't the book for you. If you must read it don't buy it borrow save you throwing it away later!! If you want a good vampire series to read try Vampire Academy or twilight this was nothing compared to those books and the stories in these books are so so much better trust me!
