The album doesn't have the spontaneous feel I would have liked - I bought a live boot from the band last time I saw them which was fantastic - but it does have a very warm quality. The songs are all excellent and would stand up to all manner of abuse. As it is, they are treated liked old friends: gently and with feeling.
Buy this album after you have the other three albums - it's very very good indeed but I think you need a history with the band to fully appreciate it.
PS: They are fantastic live.
PPS: Why is this called Last train to Mashville Volume 2?
On this album you get an entree that they forgot to serve at the start of the dinner. This is stripped down acoustic blues/gospel served up with a very wry look at life . If you know the Alabama3 (and everyone should) then you can only marvel at how they can take their back catalogue and virtually re-record what I thought were true gems in the first place and create versions that are equally as good as the originals.
I can't choose between them and I think it would be wrong to. I suggest that you buy all the Alabama3 albums and make up your own mind.
My only criticism is that this album is too short at 37.32 - however quality does count more than quantity this time around!
PS They really are amazing live!
PPS Last Train to Mashville Vol 1 can only be bought at their gigs - but it does exist and is more of the same.
