5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best metal album you will ever hear 2 July 2007
By Mr. M. A. Reed TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
A friend of mine brought up on a diet of lame soul and Whitney Houston asked to hear what I was listening to one day. I placed headphones on his sensible ears and played him a song. It was called "Drug Raid At 4AM".

Ingredients: Sirens. Dogs Barking. Crashing Plates. Skipping Needles. Breakneck Thrash-Metal-on-Speed guitars. Incoherent screaming (that's the chorus), and over this : vocals. Well. I call them vocals. They're made by vocal chords. But really, it's the sound of a rightwing, redneck, dimwit American Cop yelling into a Bullhorn:

- "What's that? An NWA Record? Where's Your Stash? Where D'Ya keep `Em? Where's Ya Drugs? Bend Over Boy, We're Gonna Search Ya! We know Ya Got `Em! Open The Drawers! Smash The Stereo! What's This Wad Of Cash? Where's Your Dealer? Who Is It? Huh? HUH!"

Four minutes of that, and he was never going to listen to ANYTHING I recommended ever again. Shame. Still. "Sorry, Wrong House!". The album was by a band called Lard who you probably haven't heard of. But you should have done. Because it shows you where everyone else got the good ideas from.

This is not Iron Maiden playing comedy pop and bleating on about "troo-metal". This is not some bunch of disaffected rich-kids with a DJ and a rapper feeling sorry for themselves because Mary Rottencrotch won't let them feel her up. This is not some bunch of gimps in clown masks screaming and keeping bootleg hooded top-salesmen in hemp for the rest of their lives.

This is the blueprint. This is the best metal album you will ever hear. This is Ministry on gonzoid amphetamine filth and urban paranoia, playing twice as fast, with twice as much as passion, and ten years ahead of their time.

"The Last Temptation Of Reid" is one of the cornerstone, seminal, landmark metal albums. It may only have sold a pittance compared to the parent bands that spawned it (The Dead Kennedys and Ministry). It may only be available from Jello Biafra's label in the States these days. It may only be by a band that have never managed to get their act together long enough to perform a tour.

It may only be the record that towers over the shadows of Nu-Metal and tells them, this is how its done.

From the opening, nailed-to-the-floor, breathless paranoia of "Forkboy" - last seen as the soundtrack to a prison riot in Natural Born Killers : and the riot pales in comparison - to the final, crushing doom of "I Am Your Clock", "The Last Temptation Of Reid" is probably best typified by its artwork : A suburban housewife being attacked by a 50 foot Monster truck. Even the art turns "Appetite For Destruction" inside out into something meaningful.

So take all your rich-kid, InMe angst and empty posturing bull, and listen to a band that not only means it, but lives it, because they have no choice, because the US Justice System tried to close them down, and because they truly do know the enemy. And it is the bland, diluted corporatisation of anger into a saleable commodity.

This is the real thing. Uncompromising. Innovative. Obscure. Furious as the anger of a righteous God - and just as compelling. Ignore at your peril - and to your detriment

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome collaboration from two true pioneers 29 Nov 2003
Format:Audio CD
Lard are one of the finest underground bands that you've probably never heard of, but once you find out their line-up, it won't surprise you how good they are. They comprise Al Jourgensen, Paul Barker and the legend that is Jello Biafra, or to put it another way, Ministry fronted by the brains behind Dead Kennedys. Not a bad combination bad by anyone's standards. And if you're wondering, yes, they are every bit as good as the personnel suggest they should be. As you'd expect, the music is a hybrid of Ministry's grinding Industrial-Thrash hybrid with Biafra's manic ravings and political concience at the front in place of of Jourgensen's digitally enhanced sneer, and it all works and absolute treat. Every one of the nine songs on the album is brilliant, but special mentions have to go to the self-explanatory 'Drug Raid At 4 A.M.', the maniacal cover version of 'They're Coming To Take Me Away' and 'Sylvestre Matuschka', the true story of a man who gained sexual satisfaction from blowing up trains. Any fans of either Ministry or Dead Kennedys will absolutely lap this up, along with anyone else with an interest in any form of intelligent Metal music. Phenomenal stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unhinged genius 24 Aug 2007
By Brack
Format:Audio CD
This album is essential if you like any of Jello Biafra's other work, and recommended for everyone else regardless. You get razor-sharp techno thrash punk metal delivered with dark cynicism and boundless venom. Themes covered will be familiar to Dead Kennedys' devotees (social alienation, corruption, state and corporate manipulation), and you should be whipped up into a self-righteous rage in no time at all. It's paranoid, it's schizophrenic, it's hare-brained, scattershot and brilliant. Love it.
