Product Description

Product Description

These ornate, mysterious stories, written in Isak Dinesen's later years, range from a chilling gothic tale of sorcery and witchcraft, "The Caryatids", to a glittering, haunting depiction of an aristocratic family in 19th-century Denmark in "Copenhagen Season".

What a joy this book was to read! I loved every page of it. I have a friend who has recently returned from a trip to Kenya and I have recognised parallels between some of her descriptions of the people and those in this book, despite the changes in time. I was not certain that I would enjoy the book when I bought it as I worried that being of a colonialist time the language might seem offensive to me. However this was not the case. I think there are some very wise words contained within this book and the strong voice of the narrative, whether you agree with what is said or not, is eloquent and compelling in its reasoning. I will be reading this book again.

Last works of a master writer 25 Oct 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
More fictional than Out of Africa, more along the lines of Babette's Feast. Stories are set throughout Europe, sometimes in locales only hinted at through the character's names. Dinesen reminds me of the sudden twists in Borges or Edith Wharton's short stories. 340 pages, 12 stories.

Great Tales By A Great Storyteller 28 May 2008

Old-fashioned, elegant entertainment and first-rate literature in the bargain. These stories have the magic of fairytales (for grown-ups) and the wisdom of great art.
