Product Description

All 13 episodes from the first two series of Roy Clarke's popular comedy set in the Yorkshire Dales. In 'Short Back and Palais Glide' the friends go in search of Compo's key. 'Inventor of the Forty Foot Ferret' sees Blamire try to get Compo into church. 'Pate and Chips' has the gang spend a day out at a stately home. 'Spring Fever' finds Compo indulging in carnal fantasies about Nora Batty. 'The New Mobile Trio' sees Clegg and friends taking to the road in their new £30 car. 'Hail Smiling Morn or Thereabouts' has Blamire rekindle his interest in photography. In 'Forked Lightning' Clegg needs to fix his bike. 'Who's That Dancing with Nora Batty?' sees Compo sweeping the wrinkly-stockinged one off her feet. 'The Changing Face of Rural Blamire' has the unholy trio launch a window cleaning service. 'Some Enchanted Evening' finds Compo pursuing his one true love when Wally Batty goes away. 'A Quiet Drink' sees Compo, Blamire and Clegg attempt to squeeze a round of drinks out of Mouse. 'Ballad for Wind Instruments and Canoe' has the trio embark upon a canoe expedition, Finally, in 'Northern Flying Circus', Compo dons goggles and helmet to become the new Barry Sheen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hugely entertaining 16 Sep 2004
When I first saw Last Of The Summer Wine many years back, Foggy had already joined the trio. The more curious was I to discover the early episodes, when both the actors and the writer were still developping the characters which I have grown to love so much. Luckily, Roy Clarke's writing was brilliant right from the start, and although the look and the feel of the episodes is not quite as relaxed and polished as in the later series, this is funny and endearing stuff. The early Compo is as scruffy and childish as you'd want him, and Peter Sallis' Clegg is one of the most underrated creations in the history of comedy. There' nowt better!

5.0 out of 5 stars The old codgers at their best 13 April 2003
I have just had the privilage of watching all 13 episodes from the first two series of Last Of The summer Wine and I don't remember the last time I laughed as much in my life. Having been made nearly 30yrs ago it was easy to forget the storylines from so long ago, so it was nice and fresh when I sat down to watch the lovable trio. I won't spoil the plot for those of you who have not seen it before or those of you who have but don't remember any of the original plots from the first two series but I will say this without any fear GO OUT AND GET IT and be prepared to laugh your wellies off

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic comedy 24 Sep 2003
What a joy to own. I read the reviews of others and am glad that the majority follow my own opinion of how good the early series was. The review that could not find any humour in them at all is sad. But everyone is entitled to an opinion, albeit a minority one. I cannot wait for the next series to be put onto DVD, I hope it is in the pipeline. The sheer expertise of the writers captures and creates three fantastic characters, in one of the most glorious parts of England and takes them through various comical scenarios, which can easily be aquainted with life today. What of the slapstick, it is not outdated, it still has its place, as does modern comedy. I would beg the viewer to watch again who found this un-funny. It was clean, good humour, with seaside postcard inuendo's. A classic series. It may have dwindled in the latter stages, especially when main characters sadly died, but it will live on as one of Englands classic comedy series. Roll on the next set on DVD.
And all that from an Essex lad, whose heart wants to be in Yorkshire.

'Last Of The Summer Wine'- Series 1 and 2, is long before Foggy, Seymour, Truly, or house proud Edie Pegden. These are the very early days of the series, when Nora Batty was refered to as Mrs.Batty, but was still fending off Compo, Ivy as always ran the cafe, but with her husband Sid, (frequently throwing the crockery at him), the trio themselves were Michael Bates as leader of the trio and know-all Cyril Blamire, ''less of the Cyril'', Bill Owen as scruffy Compo and Peter Sallis as mild mannered Norman Clegg. It isn't till later episodes on these Disc's that Kathy Staff's character is refered to as 'Nora Batty'. In this early series, the trio smoke, Compo and even Ivy swear, usually Compo saying ''bloody hell'' or ''silly sod'' and Ivy ''well bloody pay for it''. Compo is just as child like, as he is in the later series and is seen climbing trees and having fun round a derelict factory building, rolling two old tyres and an empty oil drum down a hill, while Clegg encourages him and a disaproving Blamire looks on, ''he'll have that mill chimney down, look at him''. Keen eyed viewers will notice that Compo is wearing his trademark wooly hat and wellies, however Nora Batty is not wearing her trademark wrinkled stockings, but is wearing 'un-wrinkled' stockings with ankle socks, they don't have wrinkles in them until the second series and Compo makes his first ever reference to them. There are many funny moments in this early series like Compo in the local church, Blamire's multi-coloured face after he accidently sprays himself with Shiny Glow and Blake Butler and Rosemary Martin as librarians Mr.Wainwright and Mrs.Partridge (who are rather like Howard and Marina from the later 'Summer Wine' Series).... 5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best British comedy shows......ever!! 10 April 2008
What can I say? I remember this show from my childhood (the later shows, anyway) and I have always loved it as it gives me a warm, nostalgic feeling and always makes me smile.

It is a gentle show and has some very understated jokes and the earlier series are refreshingly non-PC (just like Britain was in the 70s). The trio of Compo, Clegg and Blamire (and later Foggy, Seymour, Truly and a host of other memorable characters) are all the more comical as most people can identify with them in some way or know someone like them (the way that Compo laughs is the spitting image of the way my Dad does).

I would highly recommend this show to anyone, although set in a little Yorkshire village (with some stunning scenery) it crosses all cultural boundries and is a fun, family show.

I would have given it more than five stars, but I can't.

5.0 out of 5 stars first summer 23 April 2007

I still like these programs after all these years .A couple of points however . Firstly the pilot program is missing from this issue which is rather suprising given that UK Gold etc have shown it along with the episodes in these DVDs . Michael Aldrich wasn't in those early episodes as detailed above ,in fact Michael Bates played Blamire in the first two series .
