Welcome back to the peaceful village of Holmfirth on the edge of the Yorkshire Penines. Peaceful, that is, until some of its inhabitants bring the usual mayhem to perfectly ordinary events: When it’s Clegg’s birthday, for instance, he takes the precaution of celebrating it as far as possible from the villagers – what could possibly go wrong with that? Then there’s Barry, who wins a rather special prize that is guaranteed to bring fear to his neighbours. And Howard is astonished to see Marina in a wedding dress, and Nora wearing a Victorian costume in the big parade through the town – all very peaceful.

By the time that these series were made (actually series 24 and 25 as the DVD releases have been erroneously labelled for years), Last of the Summer Wine had gone through many changes and upheavals. Brian Wilde had retired from the role of Foggy many years previously and Bill Owen`s Compo had sadly passed away meaning that the `main three` now consists of Peter Sallis as Clegg, Frank Thornton as Truly and Keith Clifford as Billy in these episodes. The production team added to the cast with comedy stalwarts Burt Kwouk, Dora Bryan, Brian Murphy and Josephine Tewson along with star guests such as Norman Wisdom and Roy Hudd. With Kathy Staff now also back in her role as Nora Batty, the quality of the acting is undeniable and it is a joy to watch these legendary performers.

Having such an extended cast is a mixed blessing however. Some of the new characters are a benefit to the show (particularly Burt Kwouk`s Entwistle) but featuring 15 or 20 characters in each episode spreads the action too thin. It means that the scripts can be formulaic and, perhaps inevitably for such a long running show, there is some repetition of jokes and situations. I think even the staunchest fan of the show would have to concede that the show was past its peak by this point and that the writing was not as sharp as in the early years.

Having said that, while the shows may be patchy, there are many enjoyable moments and scenes in these two series and this box set also provides very good value for money. Roy Clarke was still penning 10 episodes per series (plus Christmas specials) and fans certainly can`t complain that they are being short changed.

This is the 24th and 25th series of Last Of Summer Wine. Somewhere the information had changed unknown to us fans, or is it a mistake. As with some past releases we see something not right. The 30 Years of Last of the Summer Wine, two episode specials from 2003 are missing. The cardboard sleeves (outta sleeve and main box) have been change to the plastic case format which is great. The earlier releases should have been like this from the start. If the boxes got damaged you could not change it. The two specials that are featured are in the correct order as was shown on TV. On some past releases they have not been. Some of them not even released with the correct series.
If we go back to the very first box set released you find that it is not complete. The first series looks like it is a transfer of the VHS version release. It has been edited leaving out theme music and credits on some episodes. These episodes have been shown on TV since it's release in full. Why dod they not release these as originally shown? I believe it was a way of saving money. Early Doctor Who stories had episodes mixed into film length versions. The fans did not like it and they later got re-released as originally shown. Hope this happens to the full set released already of Last Of The Summer Wine. We need to see correct episodes on the correct series and in order shown. Do not forget the series should also be numbered correctly to it's original series number.

Back to this release...
It is nice to see it's release and see Burt Kwouk (Cato from The Pink Panther films) join the cast. Also it is just nice plane humour for the family. Features subtitles also.

While I love LOTSW these DVDs are poor. Over-saturated colors varying from scene to scene, episode to episode, grainy film quality. Fortunately I have a TV with 3 picture quality settings of which I have dedicated 2 settings for watching these DVDs.

There are no liner notes or anything else included with the DVD. Just 4 discs that are layered two on top of each other, extremely cheap. They spent no money in producing these DVDs once again. Just as bad as the last set. I had been hoping for some DVD quality video but it appears that the lighting people were a sleep when they filmed these.

English subtitles only. No additional commentary.

I suspect that they are waiting to see the number of sales of this series before producing the final few. Understandable as most of the enthusiasts for LOTSW may have given up waiting (or even died) in the intervening years since the previous ones came out. Very sad.

Okay top marks for amazon as this arrived 1st thing this morning and about time how, long have we waited for this release? it seems like years, "wait a minute it has been years" any way As usual last of the summer wine does not disappoint even without Foggy, Compo, Wally, Seymour. these episodes are great and will have your sides splitting in no time. Each episode is a joy to watch and carries on that great tradition of well written comedy that us British are good at. Think fools and horses, Steptoe, and millions more. British comedies are far superior to any other country in the world and for that we should be proud. There is only one snag regarding this boxset and it really is a major one. If you ,like me have all the other series you will notice that each boxset has a cardboard sleeve and when the case is taken out , it opens out to reveal all disc's. Unfortunately with this set it is just a normal standard dvd plastic case with 4 discs inside and that's it. It looks very cheap and when standing next to my other summer wine boxsets looks like its a pirate. What is it with playback they have made us fans wait for almost eternity and when they do release it. the job they do looks rushed as though they could not be bothered. They really have not done last of the summer wine justice or the fans for that matter, So the questions are is it worth buying? YES 100%, is it just as funny as when compo etc were in it? YES DEFINATELY so what you waiting for BUY it Now. Message to Playback Get off your backsides do the fans and the show proud and hurry up and release the next volumes, WE WANT THEM ALL by this time next year and go back to putting the dvd's in the original slip cases you tightwads. Remember its the fans who pay your wages.
