This DVD contains four Last Of The Summer Wine Christmas specials made between 1978 and 1982 -

1978 - Small Tune On A Penny Wassail
1979 - And a Dewhurst Up A Fir Tree
1981 - Whoops
1982 - All Mod Conned.

Not being a fan of the programme (but a huge fan of Christmas!) I wasn't sure what to expect. However I was really pleasantly surprised. 'Small Tune On A Penny Wassail' was by far the best with some very funny lines. There's definately a charm about these old episodes especially the scenes involving the late John Comer as Sid and Joe Gladwin as Wally Batty. By the time that the first of these specials was aired, there had only been four series and so was still quite fresh. On the closing credits of 'Whoops' the theme tune is sung with lyrics and performed by the Holmfirth Choral Society.

The episodes themselves were all Christmas themed, some more than others naturally. All Mod Conned is the least festive as they escape to a 'beach view cottage' for Christmas. I mention this because sometimes 'Christmas special' just means that they were shown at Christmas. The very first special, A Merry Heatwave, is sadly missing from this collection though.

I heartily recommend this DVD and it would make an excellent Christmas present for fans of the programme, Christmas or vintage TV. Please be aware though that this DVD is made by BBC America and so you'll need a multi-region DVD player. A shame really because this would sell by the bucketload if only it were on Region 2.

***UPDATE***
On October 18th 2011, BBC America are releasing 'Last of the Summer Wine: Holiday Specials 1986-1989'. Amazon.com will naturally be stocking it but it will probably only take a couple of weeks for it to appear on Amazon.co.uk from an American seller.

This was bought in Region1 format - PAL/SECAM for American friends as alst of the summer wine was filmed not far from where we live.
As always, it's a combination of idiocy, senility and dressing up at Aunty Wainwright's shop. No swearing, innocent sex and lot of daft things.
Good fun and another British comedy export.
Much enjoyed over the water.

I didn't realize how addicted I was till our local public service station took it off. I must have not been the only one yelling around here...they put it back on. I have a terminal illness and they restarted the series from episode 1 so I don't think I'll be getting to see the rest of the series but it will be fun while I last !!

I have always preferred the old shows as they show life as it was and with scenery and the antics they get up to make it even more enjoyable. I love all the characters, especially Wally with his one liners and Sid as the underdog to Ivy. I just love these shows and even watch the repeats, when they are on.

Shame these collections are region 1 as its a British BBC programme. Luckily my dad who is a avid fan has a multi region DVD player. Great gift for my dad for Xmas as these seasonal collections are not available in region 2 (including the country its made!
