5.0 out of 5 stars A wee cracker 16 Jan 2005
Format:Hardcover
Found this hidden away in a dusty second hand book shop. Like someone had intentionally put it aside so they could buy it later, or the owner, (who looked a lot like Keith Richards in a 100 years time), was Bernard Black and didn't actually like selling great books. And this is great. 150 pages short, full of fantastic big brother ideas, 1984, and an ending that leaves you stunned. Loved every page. Extremely well written, clever, clever ideas and concepts and more twists than a snakes wedding.
If you ever come across a copy, buy it, guard it. In the words of Gandalf the Grey 'Keep it secret, keep it safe'

5.0 out of 5 stars A hidden classic 13 Dec 2007
Format:Hardcover
A truly fantastic book, like the previous reviewer said if you see a copy buy it and treasure it.

I stumbled across this gem whilst surfing a particular nerdy sci-fi website that I happen to frequent.

The story seems to bumble on for the first half of the book, with similar 1984 forbidden love dystopian plotlines. I seemed to be on autopilot waiting for the twist - whenever anyone mentions this book they talk about the twist, I suppose it was this that drew me towards the novel in the first place.

About halfway through I thought I'd worked out the so-called 'twist' and was smugly grinning to myself when the book unfolded along my predicted plotline.

What I didn't see coming was the OTHER brilliant twist - it really was something special......

It really turns the whole story on its head and changes your entire perspective of the book. To such an extent that I wanted to read the book again with my new found knowledge - as soon as I'd finished the last page!!!!

Buy, read, enjoy.......

2.0 out of 5 stars poorly written, dated sf 2 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
I'm surprised at the glowing reviews this book has received. The plot is OK(ish), if a bit flimsy, but it's very poorly written, and it hasn't dated well compared to many other sf books of the era. A big part of the problem is with the dialogue, which is mostly self-consciously clever frat-boy humour, with a lot of gratuitous poetry chucked in, presumably to lend some gravitas to what is essentially a daft story. At times the overall effect is like being stuck in a bar with a bunch of drunken engineering students reciting Monty Python sketches at the top of their voices.

The boorish hero, Haldane, is obviously created to appeal to the single, male engineering student: he's a maths genius! he's a real hit with the ladies - a REAL hit! with his judo moves he nonchalantly defeats brutish thugs twice his size! At one point, after defending his girlfriend's honour he slings her over his shoulder and ostentatiously pats her backside as he carries her away. Needless to say, the room erupts into applause and the little lady is smitten.

As well as this sort of hairy-chested sexism, there is also a nasty (and incongruous) racist outburst towards the end of the book that really jars. Again, it's probably a reflection of the age in which this book was written, but it's another reason why this book hasn't aged well.
